Coffee has been a part of the Celina community for over 100 years. In 1865, John A. Roebuck and his brother-in-law, James W. Roebuck, started roasting coffee beans on their family farm in what is now the town of Celina. The first coffee shop opened in 1895 in downtown Celina and was called the Coffee House. In 1922, Mr. & Mrs. John Hargrave opened their own grocery store in Celina and began selling prepared coffee as well as ground coffee from their home kitchen. Their grandson, Cecil Hargrave, took over the family business in 1975 and continued to grow the company into today’s celinispecialtycoffeecompany® with more than 400 locations across Ohio and Indiana. Celina’s rich history is also reflected in its many businesses that have adopted it as their primary locale for sale or service: hotels (The Royalton), restaurants (Lakeside Tavern), retail stores (Jardine’s) and gas stations (Texaco). Celina, Ohio is a small town located in the northernmost county of Stark County, Ohio. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Celina is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Southeastern Pennsylvania metro area and is home to many cultural attractions including Celina College and the Celina Arts Center. The first inhabitants of what would become Celina were Native Americans who lived on the Susquehanna River in present day Stark County. In 1788, Samuel Aspinwall founded a post office in present day Celina as part of a move to create an outpost west of larger settlements in order to avoid Indian attacks. The first settler in what would become Celina was John Hassell who arrived on July 3, 1788. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from Chief Stookey for $200 cash and 7 bushels of corn. At this time, there were only two families living within the town limits: Hassell’s family and George Stephenson’s family. The first African American to live in what would become Celina was Joshua Goodall who arrived with his family from Philadelphia on October 12th, 1813. Goodall had gone into business as a trader before moving to Tuscarawas County where he opened a store called “Gideon’s Store” which operated from 1812-1814. The land on which the community was located was purchased from the Muskingum River Indian tribe by John Celina and his brother-in-law, Nathan Sibley. In 1801, John Celina and his family moved to what is now the city of Toledo. The first school in Celina opened in 1802. The town became a U.S. village on July 1, 1907.
