Celina, Ohio is a town in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Franklin County. Celina was founded in 1801 by settlers from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The first permanent settler in Celina was John Denton. He built a cabin on the bank of the Miami River about 1802-3. The village of Celina was platted in 1803 by John Clements and James McMillin with lots numbered 1-10 on Third Street west of High Street. A post office was established at Celina on May 20, 1806, under the name "New Lisbon." In 1821, Samuel Sylvester purchased land east of present-day Celina and began to build a farmstead which he named "Emmonsburg". In 1830, he sold his land to General James Wilkinson for $725 cash plus interest and expenses. At this time Emmonsburg consisted of three small parcels of land measuring one mile square each containing twenty acres (8 ha). Three years later General Wilkinson sold his remaining lands to Isaac Neely for $1,250 cash plus interest and expenses . This left Emmonsburg consisting of eighty acres (36 ha) . After having failed several times to sell his holdings during those early years due primarily to lack of capitalization or location issues., Neely finally acquired title to all but four acres (20 ha) when he entered into an agreement with Henry Clay for $3 million dollars which included much needed transportation improvements across the Chillicothe River . In addition to being one of history's largest donations ever made in its type as well as setting a precedent for future donations like that made by Ford Motor Company founder Bill Gates (), this also signaled that Neely had become something more than just an amateur farmer looking for investment opportunities; rather he had demonstrated himself as someone who could actually make things happen financially through hard work and dedication over time! Emmonsburg continued growing slowly until it reached its peak around 1840 when it had thirty-six residents living on six hundred fifty acres (). However after that point things started unraveling: first because there were few buyers available who would realistically consider purchasing such large tracts of flatland without some significant improvement potential attached (), secondly because many people simply stopped Farms due to competing interests among themselves such as timber production becoming more important (); Finally because freezes/thaws caused extensive damage both physically and emotionally making life difficult on almost every level (). By 1850 only seven residents remained living on six hundred fifty acres () while two others had moved away (). The last resident died in 1865.. To commemorate these events over 400 years later one can find various historical markers throughout town bearing date back to 1800 including pioneer grave marker #6 located southwest corner Third street & Fourth avenue; local store building cornerstone #2 located east side Mainstreet just past IH40 exit ramp; fallen tree found near old post office northwest corner First street & Fourth avenue; cemetery cornerstone #5 southeast corner Mainstreet & Fifth Avenue
