Canton, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 69,811 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Ohio after Cleveland and Toledo. The area that became Canton was part of the major land grant to Joseph Trumbull from Connecticut on November 4, 1814. The town was named for Major General John Canton who led an American force against British forces in what is now West Virginia during the War of 1812. Canton proper was founded by James Dickey on February 14, 1825 as a result of a promotional campaign by Mayor David Fenton to attract settlers to his newly developed community between Seneca Lake and Akron. During its early years it resembled more closely than any other American town its size the then nativist German Village of Heidelberg near Frankfurt am Main which had become America's largest free black settlement following their emancipation from slavery on July 4th, 1847. On December 12,1850 Canton received its charter as an " incorporated village." On January 1st did this form part of territorial Stark County created out of parts of Summit County and Lucas County. A charter election held on April 3rd resulted in Reverend Drury being elected first Supervisor with 653 votes to 203 cast for Samuel Haggerty who ran second with 294 votes In 1865 when Stark County merged into Dayton ville official records show that Reverend Drury had been succeeded by Honorable Augustus Kappanius who served until 1870 when he also resigned effective date due to death As soon as new record books were published it would be noticed that Revd Drury's name does not appear anywhere among those honored with Mention or plaque Although pictures may exist today but I have yet to find them please let me know if you know where they are located

Polk was elected president and the ego of Polk led to an increase in development in what is now Canton. The city's population increased from 7,000 in 1830 to over 100,000 by 1850. Canton developed into a transportation hub during the 19th century as it became a major trade route between eastern Ohio and points farther west. During World War II, Maidstone Air Force Base was located in Canton and played an important role in providing air defense for central Ohio. After World War II, much of cantonal industry shut down due to competition from neighboring states such as Michigan and West Virginia; however, some businesses continue to operate today thanks to increased investment from outside investors. Today, Canton remains a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including art galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife options.
