Canton is a city in the United States state of Ohio. The population was 7,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Zanesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Canton was John Trumbull, who founded a cabin on the Scioto River in 1788. The city was named for General George Washington's home state of Virginia and it has been called "the little capital of Ohio." The history of Canton goes back to 1813, when settlers from Delaware Territory settled near what is now downtown Canton. In 1817, John Trumbull and others purchased 1,500 acres (59 ha) north of the Scioto River from the government for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). In 1825, he built a log cabin on what is now First Street and donated it to Athens Township for use as a schoolhouse. That same year, he also donated land to form Athens Township High School District No. 2 which still uses his property as its campus today. In 1827, voters approved a charter for what would become Canton Township – one of twelve townships in present-day Ohio – but it did not become operational until 1830 because no townspeople wanted to move from their homes in Athens Township due to fears that they would lose their voting rights if they moved into another township with similar boundaries. As such, Canton Townships were created instead with equal representation and powers within each township; however, since all twelve townships had an elected board of trustees only two-thirds could be filled at any given time so there was often instability and gridlock among trustees which hindered business operations and caused frustration among residents. In 1840s some members of the Board moved out west while others left town altogether because life here became too difficult due to high taxes which had recently increased by 60%. This discontent led some residents again to move out westward in search for less expensive housing opportunities but this time they actually brought over more farmers than traders making up most Buckeye County’s original permanent population including many people who are still living here today! contemporary historians note that this period marked an important turning point as farmers abandoned heavy industry towards agriculture leading to an increase in rural development while small businesses got started thanks largely to immigrants coming here looking for opportunity rather than low wages back east where work opportunities were scarce at best even without automation or technology having arrived yet!

The town center was initially located on the east bank of the Licking River, but it relocated to its current location on the west bank in 1824. On December 12, 1847, a post office was established in Canton with the name "Newark." However, this post office ceased operations on February 17, 1850 because of financial problems. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces attacked and burned buildings in Canton while residents were fighting back against their attackers. As a result of this attack and others like it that took place during the war in Cincinnati area, Canton became known as "the Union City." The population reached 20,000 by 1880; however, it decreased to 10,000 by 1920 due to various factors such as World War I and II). With its decrease in population came an increased focus on agriculture which led to a decline in manufacturing over time. However, starting around 1990s there has been an increase in manufacturing activity as companies have moved from Cleveland for economic reasons or because new technology has made them more competitive outside of Cleveland
