Canton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Canton Township. The population was 58,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Youngstown–Warren County, about south-west of Cleveland and east of Toledo. The name "Canton" derived from the French word "canton", meaning "district." In 1814, when William Tecumseh Sherman visited what is now Canton, he noted that it appeared to be an unsorted mass of villages spread over an open field. When he asked a local farmer why there were no settlements near by, he replied: "It's because we're all in Canada." In 1837, three years after Sherman's visit, John Cranch formalized land claims here with a deed dated January 22, 1837. He had been appointed surveyor general for the Indian Territory following removal of most Native Americans to Oklahoma by President James K. Polk in 1836. He had come through central Ohio on his way to remove them to what would become Oklahoma; his personal wagon train was stopped at this point by General Andrew Jackson on January 14th in Seneca County whileJackson conducted his famous “ Donation ride” across central Ohio looking for towns willing to join him in giving land away for $1 per acre (which amounted then to $ ). Many early settlers in what became Canton came from neighboring towns which had also received grants from Cranch – such as Miamisburg and Delaware Heights – so they were called “Grant Townships” even though they lay outside of Grant’s original area designated for township creation (and remain so today). A post office called Canton was established in 1830., but it never acquired a permanent population and closed its doors in 1857. However, those living here before 1850 continue to be considered residents even though their town never reopened its doors! Today’s citizens are descendants not onlyof those who made this community their home during its earliest days but also recent immigrants drawn hither by Trump Fever or other forces that have caused job growth and economic optimism throughout southwestern Ohio since 2016!

Canton is a city in the central region of Ohio, United States. The population was 17,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shiawassee County. Canton was founded in 1814 as a town on the Scioto River by General David Dixon and Colonel John Montgomery. The first post office in Canton was established in 1824. The city limits were expanded to include present-day Delaware Township on May 1,1865. The first settler to arrive in what is now Canton was David Dixon, who arrived there on October 12, 1814. He and his family built a cabin near the present day corner of Main and State Streets. They named their new settlement "Canton" after Revolutionary War general George Washington's home state of Virginia (the original capital of Ohio). Dixon offered land for which he received £10 per acre; this act marked the beginning of cantonal development. In 1825, the first school building was erected in town by Drury & Company; it served as a meeting place for local scholastic societies until 1830 when it burned down. A second school building, also built by Drury & Company, replaced it two years later. In 1828, commissioners from Ottawa County authorized purchase of 5 acres (2 hectares) along Scioto River for use as a township site; Canton didn't join Ottawa County until 1830 due to lack of space within its boundaries at that time - only Delaware Township did so soon thereafter The township site became an urban area when Delaware Township became part of Canton on May 1, 1865 . On December 8th 1870 drinking water supplies were brought into service for all residents within cantonal limits during an event known as "The Great Freeze". At that time ice had formed on several miles long stretches across much of central Ohio leaving telephone lines unusable or even unserviceable due to high demand from customers unable to get through outside service areas On January 10th 1895 citizens made history by voting 3-2 to adopt a form of government known as "Councilman rule." This system allowed residents more direct representation with elected officials instead of appointed officials responsible solely to those with wealth or political power within their ward or districts
Canton was founded in 1795 and became a municipality in 1837.
