Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 33,419 at the 2010 census, making it the populousest city in Stark County. Canton is located on the confluence of the rivers Muskingum and Miami, about southeast of Cleveland and about west of Akron. The first organized settlement in what is now Canton was made by a group of Native Americans who called themselves "The Hennepin Band." On July 6, 1796, a group led by General George Washington crossed the Cuyahoga River into present-day Stark County to start a new colony known as Wheeling. The settlers were mostly veterans from War of 1812 or earlier conflicts with Native Americans. They built log cabins and planted corn and tobacco crops before becoming embroiled in another fought-over land issue that led to their expulsion from Wheeling in 1802. Later that year, General David Trumbull established Fort Trumbull on high ground east of downtown Canton to prevent British forces from raiding American settlements along the southern borderlands during their annual summer campaign against America's enemies. In 1803, after more than two years of construction work, Fort Trumbull was finally completed and became an important strategic post for American operations duringGeneral Andrew Jackson's war with Britain over control of Florida. Afterward, many residents relocated to Fort Trumbull while others moved out into open country around town to establish new homes; these early residents are sometimes referred to as "the original Cantonites." In 1830s– 1840s local farmers began growing cotton plantations in central Stark County; this production ultimately enabled Canton to become one of America's most important commercial cities during this period also known as "the Gilded Age". However following prohibition laws enacted during Reconstruction which targeted African Americans as alcoholics and criminals (and because white businessmen could no longer trust black men working on their farms), several large-scale liquor stores were opened up throughout central Stark County starting in 1865 which further damaged social fabric within society; these businesses thus contributed significantly towards increasing crime rates within canton during this time period among other things During World War II much effort went into developing munitions plants near Canton due to its location on Route 66 just outside Interstate 90 exit 11; however due to lack thereof industrial output stopped completely shortly after Hiroshima bombing occurred so there never actually developed any significant trade between Ohio and Japan . Canton, Ohio is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Canton were traders and missionaries from France in the early 17th century. In 1797, General George Washington and his army passed through the town on their way to battle with France near Paris. Father Marquette also visited Canton in 1797 while on his journey from Poland to Canada. In 1814, John Cranch founded a ferry service between Canton and Cleveland that became one of the leading transportation arteries in the area. In 1825, James Kapp purchased 824 acres (291 hectares) of land northwest of downtown Canton for $5 per acre ($ today). Kapp built what is now known as nucleus of what would become today's town center including a courthouse, schoolhouse, Masonic lodge and other buildings. He named it "Kappstown". By 1830, about 100 people lived in nucleus areas across six blocks wide (north-south), which straddled Main Street/Wilson Avenue and School Road/Norman Avenue within present-day canton limits. In 1831 when Ohio statehood was granted to the United States by President Jackson as part of his New Deal program under Ulysses S Grant, Kappstown became an unincorporated village under territorial jurisdiction of Medina County until it was admitted as a city by Act No. 3 of 1907 beneath name "Canton". During World War II much business activity took place at local military plants including Weehawken Arsenal which produced munitions for both American and European allies; Goshen Army Ammunition Plant that manufactured ammunition for Japan during World War II; Farrell Machine Works which made precision parts for aircraft; Stroud Paper Company which operated paper mills throughout central Ohio; Hanes Cotton Mills located just outside Cincinnati where men processed cotton bales into uniforms during World War II; Raytheon Corporation's Hanford Arsenal facility producing radar equipment used extensively during WWII being responsible for many major technological advances including: development of long range airborne search and track capability using early warning satellites developed at Hanford using vacuum tubes deployed from airplanes flying over Lake Mead mountains thereby achieving world firsts with this technologyknown as “man on target” Radar detection systems employed during Cold War era nuclear deterrence operations With exception to post-World War II suburban growth there has been little change in pattern or demographics since 1950s when nucleus areas were established around schools or other cultural institutions such as churches or libraries
