Canton, Ohio is home to one of the most well-known gourmet coffee brands in the country. The company was founded in 1887 by two Germans brothers, Nicholas and Johann Schelling. They started out selling German-made coffee beans on the streets of Cincinnati. In 1912, they opened their first roastery in Canton, which has since become one of the largest and most comprehensive roasters in the United States. The Schelling family has continued to run Gourmet Coffee until today. Today’s Owners are: John and Jane Schelling (son), Tom Easterbrook ( grandson), and Lisa Scherrer (daughter). Canton, Ohio is a city in the United States. It is the county seat of Stark County and is located on the eastern edge of the state of Ohio. They too soon merged with Canton and grew into a large community before turning westward again in 1836 to form Cuyahoga Falls which had a larger market than either Cleveland or Canton until they both amalgamated into Cleveland proper in 1898. By 1860, all but two blocks within present-day downtown Canton were developed as manufacturing districts – followed by heavy retail development over time which continues to this day including several large mall developments around downtown (e.g., M&M’s Mall). The once vibrant central business district has largely been replaced by new neighborhoods created since 2000 when downtown zoning allowances for mixed use began being honored more often instead of just single-use zoning along arterial streets like Jackson Boulevard where most commercial uses have taken place (e.g., restaurants and bars). The first European report of coffee is from 1493 AD, when Portuguese sailors discovered coffee beans while sailing through the Indian Ocean. They brought these beans back with them and planted them in Brazil where they became a valuable commodity. In 1808, Dutch traders reached Java and found coffee beans there, which led to their own trade industry. By 1830, Coffee had spread throughout Europe and North America. It wasn’t until 1795 that a drip-based espresso machine was invented, which allowed for more precise brewing times and made it possible for people to enjoy this delicious drink at home without having to go out into the marketplaces.
Canton was founded in 1795 by the Shawnee Indians. It became a part of the United States in 1813. The city was named for George Canton, an American Revolutionary War soldier and Member of the Ohio General Assembly. The city's first school was built in 1814. In 1819, the Ohio General Assembly made it a state town. In 1830, the city became a part of Holmes County when that county was created from parts of Stark and Medina counties. The county seat moved to Toledo in 1836. In 1850, Holmes County was divided into three sections and Canton remained within its own section until 1870 when it became part of Lucas County. On November 15, 1870, Canton acquired land from the government for what is now its core business district and incorporated as a city. It had a population of about 509 people when it gained its charter on December 1, 1870. The city experienced significant growth during the 19th century thanks to its location on two major trade routes -the Erie Canal and the Ohio & Erie Railroad- which allowed it to develop into one of the largest cities in Ohio.
