The first courthouse was built on State Street in 1830; growth prompted another charter granted in 1834 which increased its size to eight villages (later 10) with an elected Mayor and Aldermen governing each wards () In 1840–41 also came rapid growth due to canal construction that connected Toledo with Cleveland (); this helped spur industrial development around Canton including soapmaking plants for Proctor & Gamble Company (), cigar smokers for Tabacchino Cigar Works (), shoe factories for Wernham Hogg & Co., paper mills for Jansen Paper Company () However heavy industry declined during World War I because there was no available military production nearby; instead large factory established around Dayton across the state line but closed down during prohibition After World War II significant residential development took place thanks to automobile manufacturing which led to larger industries being established along Interstate 77 outside Canton but these have all since left or been closed down
