The Canton Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1917. In that year, the Canton Naval Militia donated six boats and two moorings to the Canton Coast Guard. The first use of the boats was in 1922 when they were used for a coastal search and rescue mission. In 1942, the Coast Guard purchased five more patrol boats from General Electric Company. These boats were used for patrolling the Ohio River between Chillicothe and Toledo. In 1969, the Coast Guard gifted three destroyers to the Canton Naval Militia as part of a donation campaign in memory of Rear Admiral John Swayne who had been killed in action on May 20th, 1968 while serving with distinction with USS Yorktown (CV-8). This event helped improve relationships between both services. In 1984, four new patrol vessels were donated to the Canton Navy by Jack Welch's company Continental Paper Industries Incorporated - these vessels would serve as support for Harbor Patrol operations along Lake Erie until they were replaced by newer vessels in 2001.

They also played a critical role in rescuing Allied troops trapped on islands in The Pacific Ocean during that difficult time. Today’s Coast Guardsmen are dedicated to keeping our oceans clean and free of debris while ensuring coastal communities can enjoy their beautiful coastline without fear of harm or damage. Their service is appreciated worldwide, and it is clear that there is no one right way to give back to those who have helped make America great – each individual contribution is unique!
