The city's name comes from the University of Cambridge in England and its location on the Maumee River. The first Europeans to visit Cambridge were traders and missionaries in 1795-96 who named it after Queen's College, now King's College London (founded 1628). In 1801, George Rogers Clark built a mill on the river for flour and other goods for his colony at Fort Wayne; he named it after himself and also gave London's first college degree to a student from Cambridge - John Adams succeeded him as President of Harvard University (1836). In 1825, when Cincinnati was founded as an independent town by several Irish immigrants with land grants from James K. Polk, it included what is now part of Cambridge Township; while Cleveland had been founded by squatters in 1813 as Zanesville,[1] it became a village called Xenia in 1827 before becoming Centerburg in 1837[2][3][4]. The first house in Cambridge was built about 1840 by Jonas Hollis.[5][6] In 1865, General David Hunter led Confederate forces during the American Civil War through Cambridge on their way to invade Kentucky; Union forces destroyed most of his army at Camp Chase near present-day Dayton.[7] On 4 July 1870, Professor Charles Wirz published his famous paper "On Electric Light" which demonstrated how light waves are reflected off surfaces

In 1827, the city of Cambridge was founded as a result of a merger of two smaller towns, Holyoke and Arlington. In 1868, the city annexed the villages of Arlington and Holyoke. The city reached its peak population in 1916 when it had a total population of 23,595. By 1990, the population had declined to 14,819.
