Cambridge, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The name "Cambridge" derives from two initial settlements: cambrica meaning "a heap or mound" and amicula meaning "a market place." The first permanent settler in what is now Cambridge Township was Nicholas North, who arrived in 1796. North's grant included much of present-day Cincinnati. By 1800, many Germans had settled in what became Cincinnati as part of the Indiana Territory during the Northwest Ordinance period; they were followed by Irish settlers from Ulster province (now Northern Ireland). The town's location on the river Raisin made it an ideal site for a trading post; traders brought goods such as corn, flour, hides, glassware and other items to Cincinnati through Cambridgeport. In 1812, Henry Clay bought some land along the Scioto River for $1 million to create what would become Springfield Township; this purchase included most of modern-day Akron and Canton. In 1815–1816 Meriwether Lewis led an expedition across country that mapped much of central Ohio including parts now located in Lexington and Bowling Green counties while visiting northcentral Ohio; he named several rivers including Scioto (the namesake for today's community) after his explorer friends John Cranch and David Thompson during their trip across America on July 4th 1815 near present day Columbus, Kentucky. On November 25th 1830 Congress passed legislation authorizing Bostonian George Hennepin to explore unknown lands west of Chicago; he named three rivers - Illinois (named for Illinois General James...
