In 1814, John Crain established a small ferry landing on the Wabash River near modern day Yorktown Heights for passengers travelling between Portsmouth and Akron. This Ferry Landing became known as "Crain's Landing". In 1828 when Zebulon Pike was completed linking Akron with Cleveland, Cambridge became an important stop on this route. In 1836, George Stephenson built his own steamboat launch called Lake Erie II at present day Scranton Cove on what is now Broadway Avenue in downtown Cambridge upon request from business owner Huygens Smith Sr.. The launch provided transportation for local merchants to connect with other markets throughout Western Pennsylvania and Northern Ontario until the development of railroads made this service obsolete. After years of development by various entrepreneurs including Nathaniel Biddle (the founder of Biddle Brewery), industrialists such as Cyrus McCormick (founder of McCormick & Co.), businessmen Fenton Gibbs (founder of The Trust Company) and JH Reeves (builder/developer of Euclid Avenue), and artists like Augustus Saint-Gaudens (artist whose works are located in both downtown Cambridge and adjacent University Circle), Central Square developed into one of America's most vibrant commercial districts during the 19th century thanks to its location within walking distance both of downtowns – reaching out as far south as University Circle before turning northward towards State Street just east of Lake Erie – as well as its plethora of retail businesses which attracted people from all over town for a variety Of retail goods including meatpacking companies such as Armour & Furrow; machine shops; breweries; cigar factories; hat stores; department stores etc., along with restaurants that catering specifically to residents like Caldwell’s Cafeteria which operated continuously day and night since1858 until prohibition put an end to sales in 1920. Cambridge, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is located in Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. The first European to view what is now Cambridge was a French trader named Jean Baptiste de La Salle on July 12, 1701. He sighted what he thought was an Indian village on the southern edge of present day Akron. After investigating further he discovered that this village was actually a trading post for The French and Indians Expedition under General Edward Forbes who had been exploring the Great Lakes region looking for new fur markets. La Salle founded Cambridge on December 6, 1701 as one of his trading posts along with Fort Erie (today's Port Orchard) in present day Toledo, Ohio. At its peak it boasted 60 cabins and 400 people providing goods and services to traders from all over New England as well as Canada and Europe. In 1802 Congress granted land east of I-675 to John Stephenson which would later become Manchester Township (now Defiance Township). Stephenson founded the town of Manchester on December 3, 1802, which became the nucleus around which development occurred during the early years of American settlement in this area. When Andrew Jackson took office as President in 1828, he ordered Surveyor General James Kieft to survey potential sites for a canal through this area and recommend locations for townships within Cuyahoga County specifically including Cambridge proper (then Defiance Township), Sandusky Heights(later Alliance), Westlake Heights(later Mayfield), Fairview Heights(later Mount Pleasant), and Rossford Heights(later Arlington Heights). Kieft recommended that Cambridge be placed withinFairview Heights because it would have ample water access from Spring Creek while other Townships were situated too far away from navigable waterways or roadways for easy transportation or trade goods necessary for developing these areas such asManchester/Defiance Township etc.. With these recommendations in hand President Jackson selected Fairview Heights to be home to America's first permanent settler - Samuel Adams - on November 15, 1830 after hearing about his efforts to purchase land west of I-675 near Xenia from Ulysses S Grant during his term as Secretary of War!
