The Army has a long and proud history in Cambridge, Ohio. The town was founded by General George Washington in 1777 as a military post on the Scioto River. The first soldier to be killed in action in America was Private John Gregg from Cambridge when he fought for the British at Saratoga Springs in 1776. In 1812, General William Halleck moved the entire brigade of infantry under his command from Great Lakes City to Cambridge to make way for the new militia regiment which he had raised there. On July 4, 1814, General Anthony Wayne arrived here with 1,200 men after crossing the river on boats and marching through heavy rains and snowdrifts over difficult terrain to take position on the eastern end of village Green. Over time various barracks were built within the limits of present-day Cambridge; one of these is now called Fort Wayne Museum. From its beginnings as a garrison town it soon became an important center for army activity due to its strategic location midway between Cincinnati and Toledo on two major military routes. This role continued until World War II when Cambridge became an all-black community following prohibitionist policies of then Governor Andrew Johnson. Afterward many white people came into town while black people left because they could not get jobs or live near enough businesses to provide them with services like education or health care that they wanted and needed. Afterward most soldiers returned home but some stayed here as civilians working in defense industries during peacetime before returning to their units during wartime situations like Operation Desert Storm or Kosovo campaigns where combat posed a real threat to civilians living close by

During World War II, Cambridge played a significant role in providing food and munitions for American forces fighting in Europe. In 1945, after World War II ended, Cambridge reverted to its original name: Methodist Settlement (later renamed Cambridge). It has remained an agricultural center ever since.
