Navy gift history in Bucyrus, Ohio began with a donation by Commodore Perry during the American Revolution. Commodore Perry had served as the captain of the USS Constitution, which was part of the United States Navy at that time. The Constitution was donated to the city of Cleveland on December 6, 1817. In 1828, the city of Cleveland also donated an oil lamp to be used in City Hall. This was followed by a donation of cannons and other equipment from Captain James Fenton in 1840. The city's first fire department was organized in 1846. In 1861, General Ulysses S. Grant awarded Bucyrus a cannon as a token of appreciation for its support during the American Civil War. After the war ended, General Grant returned the cannon to Bucyrus and stated that it "shall forever be remembered" in memory of those who fought for our country during that conflict. Bucyrus, Ohio is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Bay City, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Bucyrus was Nicholas Flinn in 1835. The town was platted in 1892 by David W. Lewis and named for General James H. Wilson, who had served as governor of Michigan during the Mexican–American War and as military commander at Vicksburg (1863). A post office called Bucyrus was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1903, the trackage of the Huron & Western Railroad through Bucyrus were purchased by the Michigan Central Railway and became part of that company's line from Detroit to Grand Rapids. The town also developed a waterworks system that supplied water to nearby villages and towns. In 1916, Bucyrus adopted a municipal charter which provided for a common school district with five schools; an election held two years later resulted in the erection of a new government building on Main Street which served as city hall until it burned down in 1951. That year saw the opening of the first restaurant within walking distance of Bucyrus when Julius Caesar’s opened on Commercial Street near State Road 10B (now US 11). In 1939, local businessman Earle Duchamps erected an elaborate glass structure known as "The Duchamps Pavilion" on North High Street just west of downtown; this rare example of Art Moderne architecture has been preserved unchanged since its construction date and is open to visitors today (www.duchamps pavilionbucyrusohio.com).
