In 1928, members of the Ohio National Guard were called to duty during World War II and many units stationed in Bucyrus stayed until 1945 including Battery D (1st Battalion) Cincinnati Artillery which operated from a Armory on Commercial Square until it moved to Pemberton Barracks east of downtown Columbus in 1944).
