In 1812, a group of men set out on foot from Brunswick to purchase five acres of land near the present day intersection of High Street and Elm Street for coffee production. This initial effort was successful, and the men returned home with a large shipment of beans. By 1814, there were five coffee houses in town, and it had become an important hub for trade and commerce. Coffee production continued until 1865 when a fire destroyed most of the facilities. In 1896, a new plant was built at 419 High Street which continues to produce coffee today.
