Police gift history in Brunswick, Ohio began with a Police Department gift shop on May 1, 1907. The store was located on the corner of High and Main Streets and functioned as the department’s central purchasing office. From this location, police officers could purchase anything they needed for their patrol unit or home protection. The first ever police officer insignia was created at this location in 1907. It consisted of a blue bandanna with the words “Brunswick” written upon it in yellow lettering. This insignia remained until 1931 when it was replaced by a white patch with a blue shield carrying the word “POLICE” in red letters. The first cruiser for the Brunswick Police Department was purchased from Cleveland Police Department on November 12, 1951. The cruiser was affectionately dubbed the “SATURN” by its drivers because it resembled an electric car that had been imported from Detroit, Michigan. Unfortunately, within two months of its purchase, the SATURN had to be destroyed due to mechanical problems. However, within one year of its purchase, another Cadillac-branded cruiser became available for purchase from Cleveland Police Department at an auction held by the Columbus Division of Waterfront Development Corporation (CDWDC). This new Cruiser-Inspired Unit (CIU) featured advanced engineering that made it morelikable to what officers were used to seeing on television shows like cop cars and SWAT teams during the 1950s and 1960s. The CIU lasted until 1978 when it was retired due to budgetary limitations within the departmental budget. In response to this retirement, a new decision was made to sell all remaining assets within CDWDC and begin anew with a new dealership which would serve as both our headquarters and main source of sales for all police equipment throughout our agency including bicycles etc…. This establishment would become known as Beasley’s/Brunswick Police departments second store after we opened our doors back in 1978…..In 1984 our department moved into their current facility located at 214 South High Street which has since been renamed after Patrolman John Beasley who served stints here between 1964-1968……….Today we continue operation out of old Beasley building which is now used as storage along side other law enforcement agencies across town….. Because of these many years of continuous service through many iterations we are able to offer something truly unique when selling items such as cruisers or bikes etc., not found anywhere else………….. This growth has led to increased traffic congestion on streets such as Jameson Avenue and George Street which have resulted in some damaged infrastructure including collapsed sidewalks and streetlights. The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its role in munitions production and its proximity to Allied forces stationed in Europe. After the war, Brunswick experienced a period of decline and social unrest that caused it to become known as an economic ghost town. However, recent redevelopment has led to renewed interest in the city and its history.
