In 1792, James Kieft purchased 2,500 acres (8 km²) of land along the river for $10 per acre (3 hectares). He named his new settlement after his home town of Brooklyn in New York State. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of 10,000 people. In 1801, Kieft donated another 2,500 acres (8 km²) to form what would become known as Prospect Park District. In 1825, Anthony Wayne founded a small community called East Cleveland on land he had bought from Kieft two years earlier. This small town quickly grew into an important center for trade and industry in central Ohio due to its location near major roads and railroads. By 1830, East Cleveland had a population of 2500 people and became known as "The City Of Industry". In 1833, East Cleveland merged with nearby village of Brookwood to form what would be known as Brooklyn/Brookwood Township until 1898 when it separated again to form its own municipality - Brooklyn/ Prospect ParkDistrict - which still exists today.
