The first handguns to be sold in Brooklyn were Colt revolvers (later Colt Python pistols). The Brown brothers operated a gunsmith shop on Second Avenue between Beech and Clinton Streets. In 1865, the Dixon brothers sold their business to A.S. Neumann for $1,500. From then until 1937, the Neumann family ran the store. In 1907, shooter Augustus Saint Louis donated a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver to the Brooklyn Police Department as part of its Officer's Museum collection. This revolver is currently used by NYPD officers as part of their ceremonial firearms program. In 1933, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia issued an order limiting handgun purchases to citizens aged 21 or older because of concerns about crime rates in New York City during this time period. As a result of this order, many shotguns and handguns were confiscated from civilians living in Brooklyn before being returned to their owners following inspections by city agents.
