In 1865, Emanuel Krieger founded The Krieger Cafe, which became one of the largest and most successful coffeehouses in Ohio. From 1870 to 1889, The Coffee House Plus operated as a grocery store and cafe on Elm Street between High and Low streets. In 1890, businessman John D. Rockefeller purchased the business from Krieger and changed its name to Rockefeller's Coffee House. It remained an important stop for Columbus residents during Prohibition because it served as an illegal market for beer and other contraband alcohol. In 1933, the business was sold to retail giant Jiggs Furniture Company and closed permanently.
Broadview Heights, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 508, up from 498 at the 2000 census Founded by Methodists in 1795 as an agricultural village on a tract now covering , Broadview Heights became an incorporated town in 1837. It became a city in 1912 and has since been one of Greater Cleveland's most populous cities with over 1 million residents. The name "Broadview Heights" is derived from two nearby hills which form its skyline: Broadview Hill to the north and Broadway Ridge to the south. In 1907, it was determined that "Broadway Heights" should become its formal name because of its location along several major avenues running through downtown Cleveland – broadways being streets named for various places such as King Street or Clinton Avenue in Manhattan – as well as its proximity to many theaters and other entertainment venues. The current pronunciation of "broadway" is often mispronounced as bully (not Bol-ver-wah), so "Broadview Heights" has been popularly pronounced since 1912. In 1830, James Fenton bought 640 acres (248 hectares) near what is now Broadview Hills from George Rogers Clark for $5 per acre ($50 per hectare). This land would later be broken into parcels and sold off until it constituted only 2/3rds of what today constitutes Broadview Heights; including much of what is now Euclid Ave., Wilson Ave., University Dr., West 95th St., Canfield Rd., etc.. In 1836, John Richardson built his home at 821 Euclid Ave.(now part of Oneida Mall) which he called 'Richardson's Grove'. A few years later he acquired another 400 acres (160 hectares) northeast cornering Euclid Ave./Wilson Ave./University Dr./Canfield Rd./Euclid Rd.- making him one hundred percent ownerof all these properties - becoming known colloquially as 'The Big Guy'. He died suddenly in 1849 without any children to take on his responsibilities and left everything to his friend Abraham Lincoln who had married Richardson's granddaughter Anna Illinois Lincoln; both men were buried together at Elmwood Cemetery east side of Euclid Avenue between Wilson Ave.–Wilson Blvd.–University Dr.–Canfield Rd.–Euclid Road(now part of Oneida Mall). Abraham Lincoln then sold all but 10% back to their original owners plus interest before moving away for good leaving behind beautiful childhood home almost completely untouched...the house still stands today on Wilson Blvd.-University Dr.-Canfield Rd.--and overlooks Oneida Mall! This story provides excellent insight into how wealth can divide families even though they are within driving distance to each other--a common occurrence during early 19th century America when families lived close together due to available land and easy access to transportation. For example, James Fenton could have easily taken advantage if his initial purchase had not been published newsworthy so Abraham Lincoln had priority over others trying get their hands on this valuable piece o' real estate! Broadview Heights, Ohio is a small town located in central Ohio. It was founded in 1825 and has been home to many notable people over the years. The town was originally called "Canton" after the nearby village of Canton. In 1881, Broadview Heights merged with neighboring towns Oshkosh and Waverly to form a new city, Cincinnati. However, due to population growth and other factors, the city voted to secede from Cincinnati in 1907. Today, Broadview Heights remains an unincorporated community within Cincinnati. The history of Broadview Heights begins with its founding as a small village on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. At first, the town consisted only of a few families who fished and hunted for food during their daily lives. By 1830, however, there were enough residents living in broad view heights to warrant incorporation into a new township under the name of Canton. In 1881, when this merger took place, Broadview Heights had grown to include 4 settlements totaling 350 residents: Appleby-Hall (now part of Medina County), Byronville (now part of Lucas County), Dearborn-Wenzel (now part of Butler County), and Wickliffe (now part of Hamilton County). Over time, various businesses were established in what is now broad view hills including grocery stores such as Kroger and Safeway; department stores such as JCPenney and Sears; movie theaters like Regal and Metro; and post office buildings like National Bank Plaza which still stand today. One popular tourist spot in broad view hills was Appleby Park where visitors could enjoy nature sounds while playing games or just taking walks around the pond. Additionally, several churches were built throughout period including First Baptist Church which still stands today; Methodist Episcopal Church which burned down in 1922 but was rebuilt again later that year; Roman Catholic Church which also burned down but was reconstructed multiple times over time; finally Holy Name Cathedral which still stands today! In addition to its statewide reputation for excellence at art museums such as The University Museumof Art & History in Cleveland or The Art Institute Of Chicago - both located within walking distance - numerous galleries also operated throughout broad view hills during this time including Gallery 9 at 6th & Delaware Streetswhich opened its doors in 1925 ; Lighthouse Gallery on 5th Street between Walnut & Delaware Streetsin 1928 ; Gilded Age Gallery on Elm Street between Walnut & Delaware Streetsin 1935 ; The Fine Arts Center at 263 Vine Streetopened its doors in 1938 ; plus dozens more! Homespun enterprises continued up through Prohibition until 1933 when all alcohol production ended across Ohio following ratification by Congress of Prohibition Act by President Franklin D Roosevelt that same year! During this time periodbroad view heights produced several famous local entrepreneurs such as Hap Arnold who ran an automobile dealership/repair shop on 7th street west between Walnut & Delaware Streetsknown as 'the Arnold House'; Homer Menard who started publishing newspapers called Menards News Tribune (); Julius Erving who played professional baseball for five teams over his career ('The Answer Man'); Wendell Corey whose restaurant became one OF THE FIRST IN AMERICA TO RETAIN A NAME AFTER OPENING ITS DOOR WHEN IT WAS RETIRED FROM BUSINESS IN 1945 (' Corey's Place );[and] Jack Dempseywhose boxing ring sat atop quarries near where it remains today at 722 Springvale Avenue! Allison familyowned grocery store moved out after WWII because they couldn't compete with larger chainsawsnearly every neighborhood grocery store closed up shop during prohibition era due mainly to rising prices associated with expensive booze taxes . Finally Post Office building closed down circa 1957.'
Broadview Heights is a neighborhood in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 27,362 at the 2010 census. It contains many of the older brick and Frame homes of broadview Heights Neighborhood Association which have been around since the early 1800s. The neighborhood has a rich history dating back to 1814 when a group of wealthy merchants founded Broadview Heights Township in what is now Cuyahoga County. The founders were farmers who had purchased land east of Cleveland from Native Americans. They named their township after their view looking out over Broadview Lake. In 1825, John Quesnay bought 2,000 acres (930 hectares) in what is now Broadview Heights and began developing it into an upscale residential area with mansions, churches and other large buildings. In 1827 he built the first house in broadview Heights – a two-story log cabin named "Quesnay's Hill". In 1870, businessman George Romney bought 1,500 acres (560 hectares) near present-day Mayfield Mall for $7 million dollars and started developing it into one of Greater Cleveland's largest commercial areas. He called his area "Romneyville". Romneyville quickly became known as one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Cleveland because of its high levels of education and business activity.
