The cups and mugs were given as part of a sailor's subscription program that allowed them to give back to their shipmates who had served during World War I. In 1928, navy personnel from the USS Constitution also donated two sets of flags with blue backgrounds for use at Navy Day parades in Broadview Heights. The first flag set was given to the church on Father's Day, and the second set was gifted to the city on Columbus Day. From then on, Navy Day would always commemorate June 6th each year when these gifts were delivered.
Broadview Heights is a census-designated place in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,746 at the 2010 census. Broadview Heights is part of the Portsmouth, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Broadview Heights was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. A sawmill and grist mill were built there in 1825, and the community began to grow quickly thanks to its location on the fertile River Thames Valley. By 1830, Broadview Heights had a school and a post office. In 1835, the town became a village when it joined Portsmouth Township. During World War II, broad view heights played an important role as one of four temporary airfields used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The local economy also grew after war ended to support new industries such as plastics manufacturing and defense contracting. In recent years, though all eyes have been focused on Portsmouth due to its growing industrial output and population growth – Broadview Heights has slowly begun to experience increased prosperity as well with several new businesses opening their doors recently including two restaurants - One located adjacent to IHOP & another just off of US 22 neighboring Main Street - both helping to revived what had once been an active nightlife district for locals living near IHOP & US 22/Broadway Avenue (approximately 1 mile from where IHOP is located). After World War II, following suburban development in northwestern Ohio, broadview Heights declined as social mores shifted away from agriculturalism and toward modernity. However, it retains some of its cultural traditions including a strong sense of community identity and support for local government. In 2000, Broadview Heights celebrated its centennial with festivities that included an event at Lorain County International Airport featuring live music from transcendentalists Emerson Lake & Palmer; food from local farms; speeches from representatives from local businesses; art exhibitions; light displays; games for children; and a parade through downtown streets lined with holiday trees
Broadview Heights was founded by the Elder John W. Copley in 1836 as a farming community located on the edge of what is now Cincinnati, Ohio. At its peak, Broadview Heights had around 100 residents and many businesses. The area started to decline during the American Civil War, and it only regained some of its former prosperity after the war. In 1924, Broadview Heights became an incorporated city and experienced another period of growth; however, this time it was more due to immigrants than manufacturing. In 1992, Broadview Heights became one of the cities in Hamilton County when it merged with Hardin Township.
