As the oldest continuously running coast guard station in the United States, Broadview Heights has been a vital part of the Coast Guard’s mission since its establishment on December 12, 1852. The station is located on the intersection of Catawba and Delaware avenues in Broadview Heights, just north of Cleveland. It was built to provide security for shipping lanes passing through the city and its surrounding area. The station served as an important stop for ships docking atCLEVELAND FERRY Terminal (now Quicken Loans Arena) and also operated a small boat service that transported passengers between shoreline terminals and Broadview Heights. In 1915, the Coast Guard purchased land adjacent to the current site of Broadview Heights Station to erect a new headquarters building which housed both Headquarters and Commanding Officer’s Offices. In 1969, when Brownsville station was closed due to budget cuts within the Coast Guard, Headquarters moved from Brownsville to Broadview Heights. At this time, Headquarters became known as “Hoover Hill” because it housed most of the Coast Guard’s Administration Offices including Personnel Records Management Unit (PROMU), Logistics Support Office (LSO), Law Enforcement Division (LEO), Fire Protection Division (FPD), Shipbuilding Division (SBD), marina operations office (MOO) and Boatswain Mate's Mate School were all located there along with some subordinate units such as Lifebuoy Department(LBOD). On July 1st 1984 Headquarters relocated again when commandant Rear Admiral JOHN KENNETH SULLIVAN assumed leadership from then- Commodore RICHARD MCDANIEL who had retired after twenty years at BROADVIEW HEIGHTS STATION. Broadview Heights is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–Springfield, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Broadview Heights" was derived from the fact that a large number of families hadowned land here for many years before settlers arrived in 1810. The first settler to arrive in what is now Broadview Heights was John Hance who built his home on the current site of Old Main Street in 1814. In 1836, Isaac Dunham moved to Broadview Heights from Wellston and began selling goods he had imported from Ireland. By 1830, much of the area around present day Market Street had been developed with homes being built on high ground including Henry's Hill (now known as Dunham Park). In 1881, George Prentice bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land west of present day Springboro Avenue and east of Dayton Road and founded Prentice Farms which became one of America's largest dairy farms by 1850. In 1896, Jno Tilton purchased 1/4 acre (0.27 km2) of land east of Market Street from George Prentice for $5 and began growing corn and other crops until he sold it to the Weiser Dairy Company in 1922. From 1916-1920 broad view heights was also home to Franklin D Roosevelt's presidential library where books were stored during ceremonies such as funerals or inaugurations; later it served as headquarters for the National Archives & Records Administration until its move to Arlington Cemetery in 2006. Since 1951 there has been a civic center located at 421 W Springfield Ave serving all needs within town including religious services (Church Services), meetings (Annual Meeting or Special Meeting), school board meetings (Board Meetings), public health inspections etcetera
