Broadview Heights is a small town in the Cincinnati-Middletown metropolitan area, located east of downtown. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,851. The name "Broadview Heights" is derived from two streets in the town: Broad and Highland. The community began to grow rapidly after construction of a railroad track in 1868 led to the discovery of rich coal seams near the town center. Broadview Heights is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The name "Broadview Heights" was given to the community by settlers in 1818 when they named it after Captain George Broadnax of Connecticut who had come to purchase land in that region. The original settlement on the east side of the village was platized in 1824 and developed into what is now Broadview Heights. In 1837, James Waddell founded a distillery in what is now Broadview Heights and became one of America's leading whiskey producers. In 1839, he built a brick courthouse and jail in what is now the Village Hall Annexe building on Main Street which still stands today. In 1865, Brownlow Mahoning Company founder John D'Aquisto bought 1,900 acres (700 ha) near present-day Broadview Heights from Andrew Mellon for $1 million dollars. This provided an excellent location for manufacturing operations due to its close proximity to waterways and other important industrial sites around Toledo. D'Aquisto quickly became one of America's top grain producers with his Mahoning Grain Mill located here along with two nearby wheat mills as well as a large sawmill and several small factories until his death in 1922. After his death, his company was merged with Armour & Co.'s Cincinnati division which made it one of America's largest livestock dealers before being sold off again in 1984 to Jardine Matheson Shipping Co., Ltd.. Today much of D'Aquisto's former property including some eighty residential homes remains unoccupied as it has been leased back by various businesses including an insurance company and an agricultural production business Today, many residents continue their ties to their home town through local organizations such as Farmers Market Association (FMA), Rotary Club #527/Broadview Heights Chapter (BCH), choir group Hometown Harmony Singers (HSH), annual festival held on Memorial Day weekend headlined by country music artist Garth Brooks (Garth Brooks Festa 2), all-volunteer fire department(Voluntary Fire Department No 527/BroadVIEW HEIGHTS), or Stroller Trotters Ambassadors club which provides fun activities for children ages 0-5 during summer months
The town of Broadview Heights was founded in 1827 by a group of Methodist ministers. The town grew quickly and in 1851, it became the county seat for Lucas County. In 1857, the town voted to move from its original location to what is now downtown Dayton.
