It is located on the Eastern Shore of Lake Erie, just east of Pittsburgh. The first known humans to live in what is now Bowling Green were Paleo-Indians who hunted an area that includes modern day Bowling Green and other areas today. Europeans began arriving in what is now Bowling Green in the late 17th century when they founded Fort Pitt on the lower James River. From 1813 until his death, Marshall was a member of Congress representing Tennessee during part of its time as an American state (1815-1817). Bowling Green is a city in southern Ohio, United States. The population was 30,696 at the 2010 census. The area of Bowling Green is included in the Cleveland-Akron-Cleveland metropolitan area, which has a population of 565,741 as of July 1, 2013. The first people to live here were the Lenape Native Americans who had been living near the present day site of Toledo for centuries before that. In 1794, General George Washington and his army passed through this area on their way from Scioto Lake to Yorktown Heights in Virginia. When they arrived at Delaware Bay, they saw an extensive tract of land lying west of the bay called "Fenway Park". General Washington ordered Captain John Tryon to take possession and named it "Fenway", after himself and Colonel Timothy Fenway (of Boston). General Washington's successor as commander in chief (the first U.S. president) appointed Colonel James Kieft as surveyor general for this new territory. In 1801, when Ohio became a state under the Constitution of United States, bowling green land lay within its boundaries along with 20 other townships located east and west of what is now downtown Akron. On January 1st 1802 by act of Congress Revolting American Loyalists took up arms against the government--a group that included some members from Bowling Green including Major Isaac Aspinwall (1768-1835) one time mayoralty candidate there). The largest uprising against English rule ever mounted in North America occurred here! In 1830, Bowling Green became an unincorporated community when its citizens voted to become a town. On July 4 of that year, they elected James Prentice as their first mayor. The town had a total population of only 10 people when it incorporated into the city on December 3rd of that year. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General Arther Grant's army passed through Bowling Green on its way to battle against ConfederateGeneral Robert E Lee nears Cincinnati.
