Bowling Green, Ohio is a city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, United States. The population was 22,827 at the 2010 census. Bowling Green is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Daytona Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a total area of 23 square miles (75 km2). The first white person to set foot in what is now Bowling Green was James Halliday in 1788. It became an incorporated town on December 12, 1803. The current name comes from George Washington's location as General Manager of the Western Reserve Bank in downtown Cincinnati when he gave his blessing for its incorporation into the then-new United States. In 1825, Bowling Green annexed much of neighboring Middletown Township. In 1865, Bowling Green became one of seventeen towns in Ohio that seceded from the United States to form the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After being re-established as a city by an act of Congress on July 1, 1870, it experienced rapid population growth due to waves of immigration and industry brought about by new railroads coming through Illinois and Kentucky. Known today as "the Gateway City", it grew rapidly enough that by 1900 it had outgrown its original boundaries including Middletown Township which continued to be annexed until 1920 when it was reunited with Bowling Green proper. In 1930, many people who lived near Akron were relocated there when that citys oil refinery went bankrupt after years of production; this created oneofthelargest job markets for farmers in central Ohio at that time as oil prices plummeted. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Wall" – a shopping mall stretching across several blocks south off Fifth Avenue – becoming one of Downtown Akrons defining features over subsequent decades and still popular today despite facing continuous development pressures since its opening day. In 2007-2008, following decisions by local government leaders chaired by Mayor David Sengstacke and crafted around community input via surveys conducted throughout Greater Akron area before implementation beginning in late January 2008 under contract with YES!
