Bowling Green is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the eastern edge of the state's Maumee Valley. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th-most populous municipality in Ohio and one of its five townships. It lies within Clinton Township, Stark County. The first known inhabitants of what would become Bowling Green were Native Americans who lived there for years before being pushed out by European settlers in 1795. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's cavalry brigade under Colonel Robert Ewing arrived to quell a pro-slavery uprising in Butler County and found an abandoned village near present day downtown Bowling Green. The newcomers named the village after General Wayne's father-in-law from Kentucky, James Ketchum Sr., who had been killed during that uprising. In 1814, as part of a larger land grant to John Denny and others from President James Ketchum III, General Wayne established what is now called Washington Park and laid out streets leading to it in what is now downtown BowlingGreen. A year later, he ordered Major George Rogers Clark to build a military road through his park which became known as Clark Boulevard today. In 1825, when much of western Stark County was claimed by Cincinnati as part of the Indiana Territory following their victory at Perryville against Harrison Gray Otis' forces outside Cincinnati proper (known then as Ross county), large numbers of Ohioans decided to move westward into what would become Clinton Township where they founded several small towns including Dayton (now home to Wright Patterson National Air Force Base) and Xenia (now an incorporated city). A Presbyterian church was built on Main Street northeast in 1830 by Rev. Amos Eaton with assistance from local resident Nathan Bedford Forrest who donated $5,000 towards its construction; this building still stands today and can be seen from Main Street eastward across Third Street into downtown BowlingGreen
