Bowling Green is a city in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 19,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bowling Green is located in central Ohio on the west side of the Maumee River. The area that would become Bowling Green was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. In 1801, Athens County was created from parts of Huntingdon and Hamilton counties, and Bowling Green became one of its largest villages. In 1814, when it became part of Washington County, BowringGreen had a population of only 10 people; but within five years it had more than 2,000 residents. The first school in what would become Bowling Green was built on Main Street in 1824; but by 1830 there were no schools for children other than church-sponsored instruction. In 1847, a group of men led by Colonel John Prentice purchased land east of downtown to establish an agricultural community called Clintonville; but Clintonville failed to take off and fell into obscurity until 1956 when it was renamed Bowling Green after Congressman Oscar Fenton Bowman (D-OH). In 1865, Congress passed the Morrill Land Grant Act which gave Kentucky grants of land to "such persons as may provide for agriculture." This included portions of what would become Dayton and much of what would become BowlingGreen including today's core downtown district. After many attempts by developers to start businesses or build homes near where Morrill grant land now stands – mostly failures – Bowman proposed naming his new town "Bowlinggreen" after him following Congressional hearings in 1911 while he represented Ohio’s 3rd congressional district (now Cincinnati). The name stuck and today’s core downtown district retains much vestiges from Bowman’s original plan: streets run parallel to each other with high Wrought Iron fences separating them from residential areas; large blocks have been left unbuilt or have been supplanted by high-rise buildings since his time; many businesses are still operated out front on prominent streets such as Third Avenue (the namesake for today's business districts), Fifth Avenue/Morrill Streets and Market Square Drive/National Pike
