The area that would become Bowling Green was settled by Europeans in 1788 when General George Washington's army passed through on their way to battle with France near Paris. Colonel John Ladd founded what would become Laddsboro Township in 1792 and named it for his friend Daniel Boone who had traveled through that region earlier that year on his Wayfaring Trail expedition. In 1801, President James Knoppers designated land comprising present-day Bowling Green as part of University Township which he enlarged to include much more land in 1800 than had been allocated to him by Congress under the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1811, William Hennepin formed an agreement with two traders from Canada who were then living among the Shawnees along the Great Lakes–Headwaters Campaign to purchase 2 million acres (8 square kilometers) north and east of Warsaw Falls where he expected them to build a military post against American Indians led by Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa during the Northwest Resistance movement against British rule during what is known as The War for Independence. The history of Bowling Green can be traced back to 1824 when Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland arrived in what is now known as Bowling Green, Ohio to establish a mission there. The Scottish Mission had come to America specifically to spread Christianity and education among Native Americans who were living on the Great Lakes region then under British control. Reverend Drayson MacLeod organized a group of Scotsmen who would help missionary John Goodpasture preach Christianity to these Indians at what is now known as Fort Wright Landing on the Maumee River near present-day Cincinnati. In 1825, after two years of work, MacLeod's group returned with three other men: David Macintosh (a native son), John Stevenson (born around 1790 in Antrimshire, Northern Ireland), and James Watt (brother-in-law to John Stevenson). They erected a small cabin for worshiping God and began services every evening at 7 p.m., which continued until 1830 when they built their first church building next door to Fort Wright Landing which still stands today - today's Emmanuel Episcopal Church . In 1826 they also constructed a schoolhouse which served as both their religious center and primary school for local children until 1840 when that building was destroyed by fire . In 1832 Reverend Drayson MacLeod died suddenly while serving as pastor at Fort Wright Landing; his widow took charge of leading her husband's Scottish mission here in addition to continuing her own work teaching Indian children religion and morals at the schoolhouse.. She soon attracted many followers among her charges including Rev George Hardie who served as temporary secretary during her leadership; he later succeeded her permanentlyboth positions held through 1862 when she moved into an larger brick mansion on Market Street called 'The Mount' where she continued serve students until her death in 1865 . Following Revd Drayson MacLeod's death some young Scotsmen led by David Macintosh decided that it would be more efficient for them if they formed their own congregation instead...this new organization became known as 'Christians United'. Baptisms were conducted from October 25th 1861 thru March 1st 1862 using Methodist hymn books prepared by Revd David MacDonald...the first preached service being preached October 25th 1861 by Revd David MacDonald before over 150 people including future president Ulysses S Grant...at this time Christians United had 11 members...A new church building was completed December 15th 1863 replacing old dead stock barns just east off High Street opposite Trinity Baptist Church... After completion MACDONALD INCORPORATED with about 50 families inside 5 stories large frame structure fronted High Street with 200 residents inside 10 story brick structure rearward facing same street along side road

It is also one of six cities within Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bowling Green were French traders who landed there in 1692 after sailing up the Cuyahoga River from Detroit. They named the place "Chardon" after their captain, Chardon de la Parte (1551-1626). Jesuit missionaries arrived at Bowling Green in 1787 and founded Mission San Francisco Xavier de Nazareth on the west bank of the river opposite present-day downtown Bowling Green. In 1812, General George Washington visited that mission while he was campaigning against Native Americans near present-day Cleveland. The Jesuits sold their holdings at what is now downtown Bowling Green to a group of settlers led by Colonel James Ketchum in 1814 for $1,000 cash plus land grants totaling . Most of these early settlers were German Catholics refugees from religious persecutions by Protestant Germans during the Napoleonic Wars who had fled to America as part of an army invading France. In 1825, John Ziegler founded Ziegler's Department Store which became one of the largest department stores in America with over 600 employees when it opened its doors on Main Street adjacent to Union Station (now FirstEnergy Stadium). The store continued expanding until 1969 when it moved into its current building on Fourth Avenue across from Greentree Mall (now Mohegan Sun Arena). In 1922, Municipal Court Judge Joseph Kapp organized what would become known as "The Knights Templers", a fraternal organization which assisted local police officers with protection duty outside court hearings and other law enforcement activities during prohibition days when alcohol was not freely available for sale or purchase throughout most of Ohio. Kapp served as their President until his retirement in 1955 and they continue today as The Order Of Malta Lodge #2223 AAHHFMIHGKRZN." In 1948, United States Steel Corporation merged with Allis-Chalmers Corporation to form American Bridge Company which built two highways through central Ohio – I-71 between Cincinnati and Dayton and I-80 between Toledo and Akron – creating much controversy among locals about whether this move represented a communist conspiracy or just good business sense on behalf of both companies. One result was that many small businesses closed down due to competition from larger steel companies; however, much later American Bridge Company went bankrupt but remain associated with modern day Bowling Green because many former workers went onto found numerous businesses including Mohegan Sun Arena redevelopment company owned by Geno Auriemma's family foundation
