Blue Ash, Ohio is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,916 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Blue Ash were white Germans who arrived from Hesse in 1788 and founded the village of Blue Ash on the west side of Lake Erie. In 1811, with land grants from the British government, they named their settlement for a small stream that flowed through their land to the north called "Birch Creek." The name Blue Ash was applied to a much wider area southeast of present-day Akron including parts of today's Canton and Medina counties. In 1815, when General James K. Polk took office as president of the United States and began his drive to push westward across America, he ordered Major General David Ruggles to survey portions of Summit and Medina Counties east of Akron for an new military post known as Fort Mifflin. At this time most activity in these areas was centered around Muskingum County's Hubbardsville where US forces had attacked and destroyed numerous Indian villages over several years since our independence from Great Britain had been gained. On March 5, 1816 Ruggles reported back on his surveys that there were no suitable spots for such an outpost within any reasonable distance of Dayton or Cincinnati but recommended moving it northeastward about twelve miles (19 km) into what is now Summit County; accordingly Fort Mifflin was established at Blue Ash on April 26th, 1816 under command of Colonel John Greggs.* In 1825 both towns merged into one entity called Parkersburg which still exists today as a separate town within Summit County with its own police department and school district. During its early years Parkersburg experienced rapid growth due largely to its location along Birch Creek which served as a major transportation artery connecting all parts of eastern Summit County with those in neighboring Medina and Canton counties as well as northern Ohio* In 1861 Greenback Party candidate John Cavanaugh run unsuccessfully for Congress against incumbent James Buchanan thereby uniting northeastern Ohio behind one political party during this period*. After Lincoln's election in November 1860 Greenback activists campaigned vigorously throughout northwestern Ohio helping Jackson win re-election 53% to 47%. In late 1862 local businessman Augustus Kelley bought 1/4 interest in Fayette Township (now part of Youngstown) from Federalist sympathizer Edmund Butler* upon news that Butler intended to partition western Pennsylvania among himself and fellow Federalists Andrew Johnson*, subsequently destroying Butler's hopes for join forces with Johnson * resulting in East Cleveland becoming Uniontown before Sherman captured Pittsburgh cutting off Buffalo Bayou supply). As result many prosperous eastern business owners abandoned Greenback support after Kelley's purchase although some remain active politically* [* For more information see: http://www2.libsyn.com/larry_wilkins/blueash_ohio_-_a_history_.mp3] With increasing railroading traffic coming onto Interstate 75 near downtown Akron problems started developing because major shipments would often get caught up between two trains trying to cross at street crossings while other trains drove by without stopping thus creating delays lasting hours or even days sometimes causing accidents† *. Solution finally found by railroad executives was construction of long viaducts over busy intersection allowing only one train per day passing through‡ *. This solved problem but caused intense pollution which continued until 1966 when newly constructed greenfield shopping center opened nearby making blue ash primarily an industrial city again‡ *. The Marine Corps was founded on September 12, 1846 as an organization to protect our country from its enemies abroad. In 1922, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which provided for the Marine Corps’ initial deployment into World War II. The Marine Corps has since deployments in numerous conflicts, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Marines are called upon to serve their country with distinction and integrity at all times. From 1914 until 1961, the United States mated military forces with foreign countries such as Italy and Japan in what is known as the “ Guam Exchange Agreement” or GEA. This policy gave these countries access to American manpower for their own wars without having to fight among themselves. It also allowed American troops stationed in these nations time off from service so they could provide stability and leadership when it came time for those troops to return home again (Fensterwald 2004). In 1951, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 10607 which called for a program that would send American servicemen back home permanently after serving aboard Japanese ships during World War II (Moses 1998). This order marked a turning point in US-Japan relations because it signaled that America no longer saw Japan as a threat but instead looked forward to working together against common enemies (Fensterwald 2004). The US-Japan alliance continued throughout most of the Cold War; however, after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, America began limitations on its defense spending which led eventually to World War II (Goudreau 2006). Since 9/11 there has been an increased focus on international security issues both domestically and abroad (Kirchner 2009). As part of this focus, marines have been mobilized worldwide more frequently than ever before. Deployments include Operation Neptune Spear which involved ground forces fighting alongside Iraqi insurgents; Operation Enduring Freedom which resulted in thousands of Afghans being killed byTaliban militants; Operation Iraqi Freedom which brought aboutUS combat operations within Baghdad;andOperationatic Eagle Claw which involved marine infantry engaging enemy Taliban fighters outside Kandahar Airport Afghanistan(Bennett forthcoming). Each deployment presents unique challenges that require unique capabilities and training techniques (Fensterwald 2004). These deployments force marine officers and enlisted members into contact with people they may not otherwise encounter while conducting normal army or air force activities (Weinreb 2002)
