It formed from parts of unincorporated communities in Greene County including Blue Ash Township, Greenfield Township, and Park Heights Township. The first settler in what is now Blue Ash was George Washington who arrived there on May 12, 1787 during his tour of western Pennsylvania as part of a wagon train led by James Krieger. The name "Blue Ash" originated with a blue dye made from coal ash which was used to make bricks and tiles for homes and churches in Richmond County, Virginia during the 18th century. In 1814 an entrepreneur named John Husted opened a brickyard near what is now Blue Ash where he manufactured bricks under the name "Husted's Brickyard". The blue dye industry declined after other brickyards developed but Husted continued to produce bricks until his death in 1868. According to the 2010 census, Blue Ash has a total area of , all land.
