The first settler in Blue Ash was Joshua Sibley and his family. In 1805, John White moved to Blue Ash from Nicholasville, Kentucky and erected a log cabin on the current site of town. In 1816, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through this area as they crossed the Scioto River near present day Blue Ash and stopped at White's cabin for dinner. On October 3, 1802, Joshua Sibley established what is now Blue Ash as an independent township with a meeting house and five Acres of land purchase from John White. The original plat included foursquare blocks with lots measuring one-half acre each side - a generous size for early settlement! The post office opened in 1817 and was called "Jackson". It was renamed "BlueAsh" in honor of then-Governor Richard Cranch blue ash tree found along Scioto River banks during surveys for national road construction (the first such survey in America). In 1860s many people left Indiana migrating to Ohio because of the American Civil War; several families moved into townships east of Lima when that area came under Union control following the war’s end. By 1870 most residents had returned to Indiana or were living in other states where they could find work opportunities outside agriculture; however some older families kept farmsteads until World War II when they became inactive due to changes in technology which made farming more difficult than it used to be; today many houses still stand where their ancestors lived before moving away from home during these years!
