Bexley is a town in Washington County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The postal ZIP code for Bexley is 42010. The first settler in what is now Bexley was Ebenezer Lewis who arrived in 1792. A post office called Bexley was established in 1815 and remained in operation until 1871. The town was platted on April 12, 1824 by John Pemberton. John Pemberton had purchased land from the Shawnee Indians around this time and renamed it Bexley after his home village of Byfield, England. The town grew rapidly during the Gilded Age and saw an influx of people seeking new opportunities to make money and live comfortable lives. Businessesowners erected mansions on large lots near downtown where today's businesses are located including a millinery shop, bakery and hotel as well as several churches and other public buildings like the courthouse which still stands today (rebuilt following a fire that burned down the original courthouse in 1907). In addition to prosperous business owners there were also many poor farmers who struggled to survive due to lack of access to resources such as water or markets that would have allowed them to sell their produce commercially viable enough for buyers to afford it without having to sell their land back again. During World War I local soldiers served side by side with American troops under General George Custer on several occasions; one such event took place when they went into battle against Native Americans near present-day Troy Hills Cemetery just east of downtown Bexley on October 22nd 1916 while Custer led his troop column through the cemetery before being fatally shot by Sitting Bull outside its boundaries while under cover of darkness while leading his troopers forward towards friendly Indian positions approximately 2 miles away from where he had been ordered not only because they were needed but also out of respect for Custer's final resting place should he be killed or captured alive among these hostile natives should he ever be discovered again). In 1948 residents voted 3-1 in favor of forming a city government over an effort supported by fellow towns officials who contended that no other community within 10 miles offered more services available both inside and outside of town limits than did Bexley itself with plans underway for annexation by neighboring Dayton since then adding 400 acres (18 square kilometers) total growth potential making it one of America's fastest growing communities along with Cedar Rapids Iowa since becoming an incorporated city two decades earlier adding another 600 acre (240 square kilometers) Growth Potential bringing its size up from 1,000 individuals per square mile (4 square kilometers) just over 40 years ago - all without annexing any other communities! Today’s version of Main Street running southeast/northwest through downtown features stores larger than most department stores found elsewhere within10 miles yet providing same level if not greater variety & quality items – something not typically found anymore outside larger metropolitan areas! There are currently six schools within 10 miles serving students grades seven through twelve with additional high school programs available if necessary: Central High School located across Dayton off State Route 15 minutes away; Rockschool which offers classes ranging from PreKindergarten through 8th grade; Unity Christian Academy located just west off US 35 minutes away; Parkland Community School located east off I-75 minutes away; Stonington Heights Elementary School located south off I-675 minutes away; Broadview Middle School located north off I-670 minutes away - making it possible for parents anywhere within 10 miles provide their child with good quality education regardless location!
