The national guard was formed on July 4, 1881 in Bexley, Ohio. The Guard was first called the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and then the National Guardsmen. On November 5, 1903, the Guard changed its name to the United States Army National Guard. The National Guard is made up of all reserve components of the United States military including police officers, firefighters, and medical professionals. It also includes active duty members from the U.S. Marine Corps and Coast Guard who are not part of any other service branch. The National Guard is responsible for providing law enforcement and security for federal buildings as well as being a support unit to state militias in case of an emergency within their state or country. Since its inception, the American National Guard has played an important role in our nation’s history by performing various tasks such as protection of our borders; guarding public events; providing support during emergencies; and more importantly serving our veterans and their families through deployments overseas and home stationed visits. Bexley is a city in Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. The population was 27,844 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL), a professional American football team that has played its entire history in Cleveland. The first Europeans to see Bexley were French traders who passed through on their way from France to trade with the Native Americans. In 1792, General George Washington made a visit here while he was campaigning against the British people in northeastern Ohio. In 1803, when Williamigg Township was organized, it became part of what is now Summit County. On February 14, 1807, Bexley Voters adopted a resolution ratifying what had been done as an act of Congress by Department Commander James Wilkinson during his tour of eastern Ohio along with other towns and villages surveyed for military purposes within range of Fort Harrison on Lake Erie: "That it be lawful for said wagon road from Geauga Falls (now Cuyahoga Falls) down into this town to be constructed." The first post office in Bexley was established on October 15, 1814 by Jno. Fenton under the name "Newburgh". The current name honors Drs. John Risky and Augustus Mifflin Richardson who donated land for development near present-day Sixty Second Street and Euclid Avenue in 1868; they also named one of their children after Bexley’s founder – Augustus Mifflin Richardson Jr., physician and member of both houses (19th century Mayor)of Cincinnati On November 3rd 1861 Samuel Peebles became the first white person born in what is now Summit County when he moved from Clinton Township to live near Sixty Second Street and Euclid Avenue where he built himself a cabin known as “Pleasant Valley” today’s Sixty Second Street between Euclid Avenue and Perry Road. The National Guard has always been a part of the United States. The first national guard units were raised in 1792 as part of the Continental Army. In 1881, President Ulysses S. Grant created the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) to provide training for future military officers. The National Guard was also founded as a militia force in 1917 to support World War I and serve as an emergency reserve army. In 1924, Congress authorized the National Guard to be used for law enforcement and protection of public order. The first national guard unit was activated on September 15, 1928, when 256 volunteers from New York City gathered at Kings College to become the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. Since then, there have been numerous changes to the composition and function of the National Guard; however, its core mission has always been defense of our country and service to others through military preparedness and outreach programs. National guard units have played an important role in both World Wars I and II. They helpedumerous communities across America come together during those wars by providing security and support while also helping protect civilians from violence or terrorist threats. Today's National Guardsmen are highlytrained professionals who play an essential role in keeping our nation safe - whether they're guarding vital infrastructure or serving with distinction in Operations Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom

The city of Bexley, Ohio was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers from the town of Northfield, Michigan. The settlement was named for General Henry Dearborn and his wife, Rachel Bexley. The Dearborns were landowners in what is now Detroit at the time of their founding. In 1837, the Dearborns donated land to build a railway station on their property in what is now Bexley. The first train arrived in Bexley on July 1, 1837. By 1840, there were over fifty businesses in the city and it had a population of 350 people. In 1848, Clay Township was created within Cleveland County and Bexley became one of its four townships. In 1860, the Toledo and Cleveland Railroad arrived in town and began to serve as an important transportation artery between Cleveland and Toledo. This development led to increased trade and business opportunities for residents inBexley.
