Military gift history in Bexley, Ohio begins with the United States Military Academy in 1802. The school was chartered as an institution to educate officers for the military. In 1814, the academy became a two-year school and was renamed West Point. In 1835, West Point became an infantry regiment and changed its name to the 11th Infantry Regiment (Ohio Volunteer Cavalry). On July 1, 1861, West Point joined the Union army as part of the Union army's Army of Northern Virginia. On November 8, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans. On December 6, 1861, General George McClellan led Confederate forces across Robert E. Lee's lines at Antietam and started what is known as "the Battle of Fredericksburg." On December 12–13th Confederate forces under General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Chancellorsville Bridge but were repulsed with heavy losses. This battle helped win Ulysses S. Grant's war for independence from Great Britain. Aftermath of this battle included over 150 dead on both sides and more than 5 thousand casualties total according to historians including eighty-four west point residents who died in action that day alone according to one source . In 1865 during Reconstruction following the American Civil War soldiers arrived in Bexley looking for their homesick families who had been left behind in states such as Georgia and Alabama after those states seceded from the United States . One soldier mentioned in local papers at this time was Private First Class Charles Wagoner from Cleveland Heights who had enlisted on October 29th of that year when he was nineteen years old . He later served three terms (1867-1871) with Company K (-2nd Battalion) 2nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry before being honorably discharged due to his wounds suffered at Gettysburg where he served as a corporal under Captain John Mosely

The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Bexley was first settled in 1810 by farmers from Delaware County on land that became part of Huntington Township. In 1812, John Dickson founded what would become Bexley Academy which opened its doors for students in 1814. In 1836, James A. Garfield moved his family to Bexley after he was appointed sheriff of Delaware County. He served until his death in 1901. His wife Marilla ran the academy until her death in 1916 and their son James A. Garfield Jr.,served as secretary of state under Franklin D Roosevelt from 1933-1939 and 1945-1949 before becoming an U S Representative from New York from 1949-1968. In 1870, General George Armstrong Custer's military unit set up camp near present day Bexley while they were traveling through central Ohio during their campaign for president; this event is said to have given impetus to development around Bexley Center Mall which stands today on what used to be Custer's encampment site

It was named after a nearby wooded area called Bexley Heath. From its founding until the early 20th century, Bexley was one of the most important towns in central Ohio. Its economy was based on agriculture and manufacturing, with major industries including brewing beer and making shoes. However, during the Great Depression, Bexley lost many of its jobs and became one of the poorest cities in America. In recent years, however, it has experienced an increase in development activity thanks to its location within close proximity to Cleveland and other major metropolitan areas. Bexley’s origins can be traced back to 1817 when Jabez Bexley and his wife Rachel set out from their home town of Butler County to found their own town in what is now central Ohio. At first they only built a small cabin near what is now downtown BEXLEY! For several years they operated this business out of their home until they decided that it would be more efficient for them to open up a store themselves rather than wait for someone else to build them something new. They began construction on their first building which still stands today - a log cabin which served as their storeroom and office complex until around 1840 when they replaced it with a larger structure that currently houses their municipal library (built 1912). It wasn’t until 1847 that Jabez really got started as an entrepreneur – he bought land east of town along Cuyahoga River (now part of Cleveland) for $3 per acre! This acquisition allowed him to start developing what would become known as “the lowlands†around his new community. He laid out streets, laid out infrastructure such as water systems, built homes and businesses – all while also working feverishly on expanding his grocery store into what are today some of the most popular shopping destinations in central Ohio! However things didn’t always go according to plan for Jabez – he incurred significant financial losses trying to get outside investors behind his fledgling community; furthermore there were frequent natural disasters which caused widespread damage both inside & outside the town limits – these events helped kill off any momentum Jabez may have had towards further development! But despite these setbacks (& occasional disaster), over time Jabez slowly but surely rebuilt himself & his community back onto its feet by creating more social services (such as libraries), opening up additional stores & businesses (including another grocery store) & even starting up programs like post-secondary education opportunities for local kids! In fact even though much later #blessed #jabezbexleysoundness took hold throughout central OH we couldn't have done it without him!!!
