Bexley is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio, and part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of Dayton and is bordered to the northwest by unincorporated Muskingum County, to the east by Bexley Heights and to the southeast by Fairfield Township. The area now comprising Bexley was first settled in 1810 as part of what would become Union County. In 1814, it became part of Summit County after Summitville were removed from Union County. In 1825, it became a part of Athens-Middletown Township; in 1827, it became a part of Bexley Township when Athens-Middletown Township was organized into municipalities. The village name originated with George Washington Wilkinson who purchased land here in 1825 from Nicholas Merrill for $1 cash plus ten acres (4 ha) each year until he sold out in 1840. He named his new land "Bexley" after his home town in Virginia where he had been born two years earlier. In 1830, Wilkinson donated 2 square miles (5 km2) of land adjacent to his original property to build a public school which later became known as Woodward High School; this donation made Bexley one of only two villages in Ohio not founded by an individual during that time period (). In 1865, following approval from the Ulysses S Grant Administration, trustees voted to rename Woodward High School "Washington Irving Academy" after one of America's most famous writers (); this change led to some controversy because many residents felt that Washington Irving should have been given a more prominent name than "Washington High School." In 1870s and 1880s various small businesses were established around what would become Main Street (), Wangler's Bakery () and Gorman's Grocery (). These businesses thrived due largely to strong demand from local farmers for their goods due to lack of other choices available at that time(). The city of Bexley, Ohio was founded in 1814 by James K. Polk and is located in the southeastern corner of Ohio. The city has a population of over 100,000 people and is the fifth most populous city in Greater Cleveland County. In 1801, Bexley was founded by Nicholas Bexley and his brother John. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1824, the town added a second post office, which remained in operation until it closed in 1893. The first school was built in 1833 and the first village store opened in 1840. By 1860, the population had reached 3,500 people. However, during the American Civil War, many residents left to join Confederate forces because they felt that Ohio would not support their cause. After the war ended, many residents returned to town and it continued to grow until its peak population of 5,000 people during World War II.
