When someone got married or had children, they’d often send their spouse or children on board a ship and give them each a gift basket filled with different items like coral jewelry, books about sailing, or even just some clothes. Once again, these events were often held on an old pier in town square. Eventually, thanks to advancements in transportation (the railroad arrived in Berea around 1885), marine gift traditions started moving from local maritime venues to more centralized places like mallards & casinos across the country. The Berea Marine Museum is a history museum that houses maritime and naval artifacts from Berea, Ohio. The museum was founded in 1976 by the late Mr. and Mrs. Al L. Pritchard as a way to bring together the community and preserve the heritage of their local maritime industry in which they had major participation.
Berea, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County metropolitan area. The Berea area was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. A post office called Berea was established in 1801, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1821, General Joseph Warren led his army through central Ohio to suppress a slave rebellion and fought at battle of Fallen Timbers on the Scioto River near present-day Toledo. The Battle of Fallen Timbers mark one of the skirmishes during The American Revolution that directly led to independence from Great Britain. In 1824, surveyors discovered coal fields near Berea and began production. In 1830, James Weir built a mill on the Muskingum River between Berea and Copleyville; this became one of the largest mills in western Ohio until it closed in 1906. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses operating in Berea; this number increased to 300 by 1860. During its heyday, Berea boasted an agricultural society (now known as The United Farmers), a Masonic lodge (now known as Temple Lodge No1), two churches (Anglican and Methodist), three schools (grades PreK-12th grade; high school; college/university preparatory school), two public baths (later replaced with four individual baths), two breweries (later merged into one brewery), eight residences—including six fororsemen who drove cows—and 19 Honest John stores local to downtown Berea where goods could be bought without paying duties or taxes on exported items from other states or countries such as Canada or Mexico which generated a sizable sum for government coffers annually The economy changed dramatically during World War II when demand for military materials skyrocketed due to newly created posts such as Cold War Europe After World War II ended and manufacturing slowed down, many residents left town for jobs elsewhere However, some residents have returned since 2000 including those who worked at nearby Parma University's Weisenthal Research Institute

Berea was platted on March 15, 1814 by General James Wilkinson and named for Berea Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Berea is located at (39.816694,-81.045211). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,531 people, 509 households, and 377 families residing in the town. The population density was 789.4 people per square mile (291.3/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 309.0 per square mile (130.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% white and 3% black or African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population
