Berea, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,554. The city is located in central Ohio on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Maumee River. Berea was founded in 1811 by General Andrew Jackson and named for Major-General John Berea, an American Revolutionary War veteran who had distinguished himself during battle at Fallen Timbers Creek. The current form of Berea began as a village called North Berea on the east side of Scioto River just west of present day University Circle. On January 1, 1825, North Berea became part of what would become Lucas County when it was created from parts of Scioto Township and Union Township. In 1827, Washington Parish completed annexation into Lucas County; this addition increased the population to 25 residents (now including Berea). In 1830–31, land ceded to Peregrine Farms by Judge Daniel Govey as part of their agreement to sell 10 acres (40 ha) each to five citizens for $1 per acre (4 ha). This land included much that now makes up downtown Berea: West Main Street south down College Avenue past First National Bank then east along State Route 56 until it intersects State Route 227 north; today's West Side Market has been built on this parcel since 1907. The first store opened at this site in 1830 and it remains one cornerstone in town history. (According to "Ohio History" magazine's article "A Brief Guide To Downtown Berea", there are several other early merchants who operated businesses at this location such as Peter Smith & Son Dry Goods Store and Mr & Mrs Haggerty's grocery shop which preceded what is now First National Bank.) The community got its start thanks to Reverend Elijah Hickson established a schoolhouse on South Main Street in 1830/31; he taught classical grammar until his death in 1840 aged 53 years old after many years teaching students from rural backgrounds how to read and write using Cherokee Indian syllables made from flat stones he collected while exploring western Kentucky near where he lived.. He left behind him an illiterate legacy but stories about “Hickson” keep alive among some Buckeye natives about their ancestor’s generosity giving back education opportunities for others.(According to "Ohio History" magazine's article "A Brief Guide To Downtown Berea", Reverend Elijah Hickson also helped organize founding members of both the United Methodist Church (UMC) and Mount Zion Baptist Church.) ) At first these schools were only for white children but within a few years black children too were enrolled although they were segregated then housed separately from whites until legal segregation took place later that decade.) In 1835/36 Rev Dr Jno Waddell moved his medical practice from Cincinnati into downtown Berea; he soon became known as “Doctorow” because allopathic doctors did not yet exist then.) By 1850/51 almost all buildings northward along West Main had been built including Griggs Block – home also once belonging to local physician Dr James Griggs – courthouse square across South Broad Street between Second National Bank building now occupied by Texas Instrumentsfabrication labs., Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC), Congregationalist Chapel (later Bethany Bible Tabernacle), two brick warehouses converted into stores frontsing Third National Bank building still standing today between 4th Ave NW - home once occupied by Danforth Drug Store - . These early settlers erected long wooden fences around their homes literally keeping their gardens within limits similar to those still observed today around most suburban neighborhoods today.). Downtown business men started using street names such as Williamson streets etc.; examples include Masonic Temple block north between 2nd Ave NW - home formerly occupied by Druggist Warehouse - Coleman St block south between 3rd Ave NW - home formerly occupied by Baker Shoes Dept store - Atherton Plank northwest corner 3rd Ave SE - lots previously owned by Mrs Patterson shoes store fronting Independence Avenue) Some residents added more recent twists like Parma Plank southwest corner Fourth Ave NE immediately adjacent US Highways 26 & 27 making it Beasley Place before finally settling on Schroeder Way name used throughout town throughout last century becoming increasingly rare occurrence recently .) Today most people call themselves simply 'BEREA' even though some older residents may remember longer names like Welch or Humphreys
