Bellefontaine is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is located on the southern edge of the University of Cincinnati campus. It was named for Belle Fontaine, an early settler in what is now Bellefontaine Township. The city of Cincinnati annexed Bellefontaine in 1907 and renamed it after its new annexation. Bellefontaine has a rich history dating back to 1800 when French traders founded a trading post near present-day Bellefontaine Township. In 1812, frontier general James Kapp sent his forces into central Ohio to defeat Native Americans who had besieged Fort Pitt on the Monongahela River. One week after landing at Sandusky Bayou, General James Kapp's force destroyed a Native American village and took 200 scalps as booty. This event is commemorated by a plaque at the Bellefontain township library reading "In memory of General James Kapp's expedition against the Indians which destroyed this village." In 1814, Dutch settlers arrived in what is now Bellefontaine Township and began construction on what would become their administrative center - Saint John's Church. The first school in Belfeotain Township was built in 1816 by Methodist missionaries under instruction from Reverend Samuel Morse Sr.. By 1830, there were 15 churches and 50 schools operating throughout northwest Ohio; all but one were operated by Methodists. A millinery shop opened in 1824 and became one of Belfeotain’s most important businesses until it closed around 1870 due to competition from mills closer to Cincinnati. During the 1840s through 1860s, many slaveholders moved into eastern Columbiana County because of cheap land available there during that time period. Included among these settlers were Jethro Gibbs (1810–1892), one of the original proprietors of BelleFontaine Township; he purchased 280 acres (120 ha) southeast of present-day Bellefontane Hall Road from Nicholas Hennepin (1785–1863). Gibbs' farmstead included six enslaved women and seven children who worked on his fields between 1830 and 1850; he also raised chickens, pigs, horses and cattle on his property for meat or milk production purposes until 1862 when he replaced them with free people of color tenant farmers whom he called "The colored troops." Some black residents did manage to purchase land adjacent to Gibbs’ farmstead but continued to live below poverty lines until 1865 when they were fully emancipated through legislation sponsored by Andrew Johnson following an insurrection within West Virginia that year led by Jefferson Davis inspired by events taking place southward within Confederate America known as Reconstructionism (). Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town in southwestern Ohio that was once a center of industry and commerce. The town was founded in 1824 by General David Bellefontaine, who purchased land from the tribe of the Miami Indians. In 1828, Bellefontaine built the first gristmill in what is now Bellefontaine. The mill produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to other states. By 1830, Bellefontaine had also constructed a sawmill and a gristmill on the river near present day Belmont Avenue. In 1834, General James K. Polk sent an army into Southwest Ohio to suppress the Native American uprising known as the Sand Creek Massacre. General Bellefontaine led his regiment against the Indian attackers and lost many men during this engagement. Aftermath of this battle led to increased production at both mills in Bellefontaine and throughout southeast Ohio. With new technology came new opportunities for industrialization in Bellefontaine during this time period; steamboats arrived at the harbor to bring goods downstream from nearby manufacturing plants such as Geddes & Douglas Paper Company and United States Steel Works (USW). By 1880, all three mills had been upgraded with electric lights, gas turbines, water turbines, and conveyors to increase productivity by 50%. During World War II,Bellemontain played an important role in defense through its manufacture of munitions such as rockets and torpedoes. It also contributed manpower through military training exercises held here as part of larger military maneuvers taking place across America at that time. In recent years, much progress has been made towards restoring historical aspects to BelleFontaine which includes restoration work on its buildings including replacement of windowsills and doors; installation of new roofs; repair/replacement of brick sidewalks; installation of porch posts; concrete resurfacing around streetscapes; planting Historic Trees Program engravings onto postcards
