The town, located about 25 miles southeast of Cleveland, was founded in 1825 by General George Washington and his family. The population of Bellefontaine peaked at around 5,000 in the 1920s, but has since declined to around 1,500 today. Bellefontaine is located on the Scioto River and it lies about 20 miles south of Columbus. Bellefontaine was originally known as "Natchez." In 1810, John Bellefontaine became interested in developing a village near the Scioto River. He named his newtown after his sister-in-law, Martha Bellefontaine. The first settlers arrived in 1811 and they built their homes on what is now the north side of Bellefontaine Elementary School. The original community had three stores, one blacksmith shop, one school and one Baptist church. In 1830, Stephen Foster moved to Bellefontaine from nearby Mentor and started driving a wagonload of goods down the Scioto Valley for local farmers. At that time, there were no roads or railroads in this part of Ohio so he had toride all the way from Cincinnati to get to his customers. Foster also constructed an early post office which served as a storehouse for mail arriving from Kentucky and other parts of Ohio

Bellefontaine is a small town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Bellefontaine was named after Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, where John Capps settled in 1815. Bellefontaine was founded by George Washington Smith on December 12, 1830 as a cabin community on the Scioto River south of what is now downtown Dayton. At its peak in 1890 there were 100 residents and six churches in Bellefontaine. By 1910 only about 20 people lived there and two-thirds of the buildings had been destroyed by fire or weather damage over the previous decade. By 1920 only one-third of the land remained standing with most of it being developed for agricultural purposes. In 1925 an act to create Columbiana County waspassed by the Ohio General Assembly and included Bellefontaine within its boundaries; however, this did not establish a municipal government for Bellefontaine until 1929 when Mayor Aiken proposed creating one due to lack of other facilities within that county at that time. The first election held under this new Municipal Government occurred on November 4, 1929 with Hosea Askins as Mayor and Fenton Gentry as Clerk/Treasurer; both men served until their death in 1930 which then caused an election for a new Mayor to take place on December 9th which resulted in Wm Thomas being elected over Lester Easley (the incumbent). The post office at Bellefontaine has been open since 1836; however mail delivery stopped service effective May 1st 1922 due to budget cuts implemented by local authorities during World War I which also impacted postal rates across America therefore making it difficult for citizens living outside major cities to receive letters and parcels from their families back home From 1865 until 1971 all school operations were conducted out of large barns located near present day Route 685 east side Road between Lebanon and West Union Streets - these days an Agricultural Science center adjacent to Parkview Elementary School offers classrooms/daycare services for students throughout term
