Bellefontaine was founded by members of the First Congregational Church in 1796. It was named for Belle Fontaine, an early settler and landowner in what is now Stark County. The first store was built in 1802 and the first post office opened in 1807. In 1824, Bellefontaine became a town under one-year charter from Ohio General Assembly No. 1. The town experienced significant growth during its earliest years; by 1830 it had a population of over 100 residents and three stores with a total income of $5,000. Around this time, cotton mills began to be developed around Bellefontaine; these mills produced a large amount of textiles which were exported to Europe. However, after the American Civil War ended in 1865, production at many local mills gradually ceased due to lack of demand or competition from foreign mills (though some remain operational today). By 1880 only two small businesses remained active in Bellefontaine; however these still managed to bring about modest economic progress for the community throughout its history though most notably through its role as a crossroads for trade between north and south central Ohio Additionally existing churches continued to play an important role within society throughout much of this time including serving as social hubs that connected people from all walks of life In 1893 construction began on what would become downtown Belmontain which quickly emerged as one of America's most thriving shopping districts with more than 50 merchants selling goods ranging from groceries to clothing . This period also saw significant development within government with new buildings erected such as city hall and county courthouse ; both structures remain active today as key symbols of community resilience following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina . Bellefontaine was founded by the Bellefontaine family in 1796. The family purchased a tract of land in what is now Bellefontaine Township, Ohio, in 1799. They built a gristmill on their new land and began to produce flour for local markets. In 1801, the Bellefontaine mill burned down and the family lost their property but continued to operate the mill until it closed in 1875.
