Bellefontaine is a town in Clinton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,512 at the 2010 census. The Bellefontaine Historic District is a national historic district that includes 4 blocks of downtown area and 1 block of the riverfront. Bellefontaine was founded in 1812 by Frenchmen Pierre-André Belcourt and Honoré de Lamarque as a fur trading post on the Scioto River. The first store was built in 1815. In 1830, the post office moved to what is now Bellefontaine Square and became an agricultural center with extensive production of corn, wheat, soybeans, hogs, cattle and pigs. By 1840, the village had 2 churches and 12 stores. A school was built in 1843 which served the community until it closed in 1916. In 1854, hemodialysis equipment was developed here for use by miners who were hard hit by cholera pandemics then raging around the world. In 1870s Bellefontaine experienced rapid growth due to its position as a transportation hub for both coal and textiles traffic entering/exit from Cincinnati through Peebles Bridge overthe Rhine River; this also aided its ascent to become one of America's most rapidly growing towns during that period (albeit one characterized more by business speculation than everyday life activity). On September 17th 1886 when crews from three locomotives working on trackage southbound along I-75 near present day Uniontown Beach derailed while traveling at high speed northbound on US 15 about 5 miles east of town Limits (just beyond where I-75 meets current day US 25), catastrophic damage occurred including loss of all 3 locomotives & their entire crew complement & derailment resulting in entire right side of road becoming impassable for 8 days (& major floodingoccurring during that time) before finally being repaired; this event effectively ended local textile production & forever changed Bellefontane
