Bellefontaine is a small, unincorporated community in Perry County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the Scioto River and has a population of about 100. The Bellefontaine post office was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. Bellefontaine is named for Belle Isle (now Belle Isle Park), a small island near Cincinnati. The name likely comes from French "blessé" meaning "gift from God", because the village was donated by John Beecham to be built on the site of what would become Bellefontaine Township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bellefontaine Township was James Cammerer, who arrived in 1800. Bellefontaine had its first schoolhouse in 1836, when Aimee Jernigan set up a school across the street from her home. In 1872, Anna Marchand opened her own school at 727 Maple Street; it remains open today as Second Baptist School District No. 2's district headquarters. In 1892, local farmers started selling produce from their fields out of their homes; this became known as 'The Gourmet Market'. Today, The Gourmet Market still exists and sells items such as cheese, meat and poultry products as well as farm fresh produce from local farms direct to consumers across town at various locations throughout the day - including their flagship store on Main Street inside the old Post Office building which has been open since 1907! Bellefontaine also contains one of only two remaining example of an early 20th century dairy barn found anywhere within reach of modern-day Cleveland - it now serves as a museum housing artifacts related to milk production dating back to 1850!

However, recent economic declines have led to a decline in population and some loss of cultural significance to life within Bellefontaine itself. Bellefontaine is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is home to the Bellefontaine Village shopping center and the Bellefontaine School District. The first white person to live in what is now Bellefontaine Township was David Dennison in 1814. He started a sawmill on the Scioto River. In 1825, he married Maria Houghtaling and they started a grocery store in what is now downtown Bellefontaine. The first post office in Bellefontain Township was established in 1827. In 1830, John Cockerill settled on a farm near present-day Bellefontaine Village and developed it into an early logging community that became known as Cockerill Gap. In 1851, Jonas Sibley built his cabin near present-day Bellevue Road and began trading goods with local farmers for goods needed for his milling operation at Cockerill Gap. By 1860, Sibley had purchased over 160 acres (62 ha) of land east of Bellevue Road and founded the village of Bellevue which today still stands within the town limits of Bellefontaine. Bellefontaine's first school was built in 1865 by Reverend Elisha Holmes as part of a larger educational movement led by Methodist missionaries across rural Ohio during this time frame. A second school opened nearby on Second Street but closed within two years due to lack of enrollment or financial problems; this left one small school district serving all of Muskingum County with only four buildings between them! Bellevue Elementary School served grades pre-K through 6 until 1976 when it merged with Centerburg Elementary School to form Bellevue Union High School which remains open today as one of Muskingum County’s only high schools! In 1969, three blocks south from Bellevue Union High School off SR 787 formed what would become Municipal Park where people could picnic, play games or just relax! This area continues to be used for events/parks purposes today! A new library building was completed adjacent to Municipal Park in 1975 which has been expanded multiple times including adding an attached annexe which housed the main library until its demolition in 2007 – making it one of centralOhio’s most recent major expansions! In 1984, original streetlights were added along SR 787 just north of Municipal Park bringing continuous illumination into this otherwise largely dark corner of town during hours when there are no outdoor events taking place! Today municipal park features an extensive playground as well as several basketball courts - perfect for winter days when family fun isn't possible outside!
