Bellefontaine is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Ohio, United States. It lies just east of the Canadian border and west of Bellefontaine Township. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine was laid out in 1814 by Nicholas Bellefontaine and his brother Daniel Bellefontaine. The name likely comes from "Belle Isle" on the Scioto River in Canada where they were born. William Mackintosh and John Brown built a gristmill here in 1825. In 1830, Daniel Bellefontane moved to Bellefontaine with his family and began to operate a general store which remain active until 1922. He also served as justice of the peace for the township from 1836 to 1840. Nicholas Bellefontaine died in 1846 and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Tiffin, Ohio
