The first coffee beans were planted on Bellefontaine's property in 1810, and the first roaster was established in 1835. Over the years, many talented individuals have contributed to the Bellefontaine coffee culture, including Don Freeman, who founded BelleFontaine Coffee Company in 1946. Today, there are more than 30 Bellefontaine-based businesses that offer unique cup of Joe products. The history of artisan coffee is intertwined with the history of Bellefontaine itself. In 1810, when John Noble discovered and purchased land near Bellefontaine for use as a farmstead and millsite, he named it Belle fontain after his wife's birthplace—Belleville, France. From this initial foray into coffee production, Bellefontane began to produce some of the world's earliest purebred espresso beans. In 1936, Don Freeman purchased the farmstead from John Noble and continued to run it as BelleFontaine Coffee Company until its sale to J&J Roasters in 1946. Thereafter, Bel Fontain became an integral part of J&J's operations - serving up quality espresso drinks until 1997 when J&J relocated their headquarters to Parker USA (now known as Starbucks). Today, there are more than 30 separate businesses that operate within the confines of Bellefontaine – all contributing to one common goal:to provide delicious cups of java made by hand using only high-quality ingredients sourced from around the world. Bellefontaine is located on the Scioto River and has a small shopping district centered around its two main streets, Main and Elm Streets. Bellefontaine was founded by General James Wayne in 1796 as an agricultural town named for his wife, Belle Fontaine. The name was changed to Bellefontaine in 1824 after the death of General Wayne's widow Elizabeth Templeton Fordyce (1792-1868). In 1870, it became an independent city after being annexed by Columbus.
