Bellefontaine, Ohio was one of the first places in the United States to have an army. The town was founded by General George Washington in 1796 as a training ground for his militia force. In 1815, Bellefontaine became part of the newly created state of Ohio and its military forces were raised under command of General William Henry Harrison. The army garrisoned Bellefontaine until 1827 when it relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana. When Fort Wayne was destroyed by fire in 1828, the army moved back to Bellefontaine and continued garrisoning it until 1830 when it disbanded entirely.
Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town located in the central portion of the state of Ohio. It lies on the east bank of the Scioto River and is bordered to the north by Bellefontaine Heights and to the south by Defiance. The population of Bellefontaine was 1,034 as of 2000. Bellefontaine was founded in 1792 by Hardin Pillsbury and his wife Deborah. The Pillsburys were among the first settlers in what would become Bellefontaine Township. They arrived on horseback and built a log cabin on what is now State Route 152. In 1814, they moved their home to what is now State Route 622, which they named for their daughter, who had died six months earlier while serving in the United States military at Fort Pittsborough in Pennsylvania. In 1821, Hardin Pillsbury Jr., widow Deborah's brother-in-law, purchased 12 acres (4 hectares) of land adjoining his sister's farmstead where he erected a large millrace called Souderton Pond on which he operated a gristmill until 1828. That year also sawing operations began on what is today State Route 152 for an eventual lumber business that would grow into one of Bellefontaine's most prominent businesses - John Crain & Sons - which still operates from its original location near Main Street and Souderton Road. A post office was established at Bellefontaine in 1831; it continued operation until 1865 when it became part of Defiance County. In 1865, Hardin Pillsbury III bought 10 acres (4 hectares) bordering Souderton Pond from his father for $1 million dollars cash and developed it into Belle Fontain Village with residences, churches, schools and stores including JCPenney’s first store opened in 1896 along with two other stores - Kress Bros./Fritsch Bros.-owned by Wm Gifford Kress Sr.; Jens Jensen’s grocery store; A convenience store/laundromat operated by Anna Lemberg until her death in 1922; Sammons Hardware Store closed around 1936; Harry Heiligeman’s grocery store opened 1935 after being leased from Geo Heiligeman’s Hardware Store across SR 622 from John Crain & Sons; Beulah Neely Jewelers opened 1961 followed by Overland Park Camera Service 1962 before closing down 1989 due to economic conditions following World War II when production dropped precipitously at many Third World countries because American manufacturers shifted production there to avoid war Supplies dwindled even more as technological advances made photography easier than ever before......................................................................... By 1990 only four out OF THE FIFTY SCHEDULED INDUSTRIES TO CLOSE DOWN IN BELLEFONTANE VILLAGE AFTER WORLD WAR II....................................................................... With less competition available for customers during those difficult times many businesses went out Of Business AGAIN such as Beulah Neely Jewelers...........................The last business left closed down was Overland Park Camera Service.........................
