Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the Muskingum Valley region of northeast Ohio. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded on April 4, 1814 by George Bedford and his brother James as a refugee farmstead on the banks of the Muskingum River. The name derived from Bedford Township in Delaware County where they were living when they settled. In 1825, George's nephew John Bedford purchased land in what is now Bedford Township and moved there with his family to start a new life after fleeing religious persecution in England. In 1827, John and his wife Anna built the first frame house in what is now Bedford Township. They named their home "Anna's House" because their pregnant sister lived with them during that time. Anna died young giving birth to her only child, who also became known as Anna's Child or Anna Bedford for short. The house still stands today within present day Bedford Township and is used as a museum called "Anna Bedford House Museum". In 1830, Pollyanna (née Gorham) married Nicholas Gorham from nearby Uniontown and relocated to Bedford with him; they would eventually have 11 children together including future Ulysses S Grant Jr., one of America's most famous presidents (1865-1929). The original Erie Canal passed through this area which made it an important transportation hub for goods transported east-west across Pennsylvania and Indiana into Canada before continuing downriver to Cleveland. On July 15, 1833, when General David Dixon ordered all British troops out of central Ohio except for those guarding Fort Pitt near Lima Lock he also ordered all Native Americans living west of the river must leave too! Most did so but some chose to stay until September 8th when they were finally allowed back into Indian Territory under terms negotiated between United States President Andrew Johnson and Great Britain’s Prime Minister Lord Liverpool who said “the Indians cannot be held responsible for our act… We are not ashamed to let them go” Continued warfare between Americans settlers and Native Americans resulted in more than 100 dead over a three year period starting in 1835 including 25 members of the Babcock family killed while plowing their land near Bertram Center while trying to gather firewood At times skirmishes erupted into full-blown warfare as early 21st century historian Dragan Stojanovic has written “Butchery had become rampant; whole families would be randomly slaughtered by warriors seeking plunder or revenge – often leading entire villages into extinction” . One group loyal to Genessee native chief Wayne Custer decided enough was enough however after clashes with local militiamen forces along US-Canadian border December 1743 - January 10th 1844 many residents turned up at Clinton County Courthouse demanding retribution against perpetrators involved army unit led by LtCol William Halleck Forrest assistant adjutant general US military district northwest Michigan Colonel John Dickson commanding Third Infantry brigade militia colonel Augustus Holmes commander First battalion Detroit Light Infantry After much debate justices delivered their unanimous verdict: no justice done - order immediately restored peaceable citizens back onto their own property ... War ensued resulting in dozens more casualties among both sides including 40 American soldiers killed two days later at Battle Creek creek While pursuingitives retreating through thick forest gunfire found bodies piled high inside burning building prompting orders from Major General Elihu Biddle commanding cavalry brigade headquarters 500 miles north Dayton Mohawk nation militia attacked party killing 12 men , nine women , six children among them four women aged 7 years old accompanying father on scout mission ....................... This event forever changed America as news reached western world reports similar massacre taking place just south of Toledo OH 600 miles east
