Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the lower Great Lakes region of North America. It was founded in 1786 by General George Washington and is the county seat of Bedford County. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The name means "place where men build homes." Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River, approximately 20 miles north-northwest of Cleveland and 25 miles south-southwest of Akron. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Bedford was founded in 1812 by George Washington Bedford and his brother Edward Bedford as a farmstead near the confluence of the Licking and Scioto Rivers. The name derives from Bed's Hill, which stands to the northwest of Bedford village center. Bedford grew rapidly during the 19th century because its location made it an ideal place to mill flour for bread and other goods exported to Europe. In 1849, local farmers formed a company to build a steamboat dock on the riverbank, which led to increased business for their mills. In 1870, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Bedford while he was military governor of Ohio and praised its millwork as one of America's "milken wonders." A year later, Sherman purchased land adjacent to Bedford Village Center for use as his winter quarters during his stay in Ohio; this allowed him to learn more about local farming practices and help improve them. The pace of growth slackened after World War II when many new houses were built in suburbs nearby instead of within walking distance of mills or businesses that had continued to thrive since before World War II.
