There has been an army garrison in Bedford, Ohio since the Revolutionary War. The first real military presence in the area was a company of riflemen under Capt. John Steuart that was stationed at Fort Pitt in 1778. The post was re-established as a base of operations for the Western Reserve Regiment of Infantry during the American Civil War. In 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Union posts in central Ohio to be disbanded and their personnel transferred to Fort Pickens at Pensacola, Fla., effective March 15th. This order included Bedford Post #2 which was renamed Fort Couch commandant’s house barracks #1 on April 12th 1865 after Major General J.M. Couch who had commanded that regiment when it moved from Cincinnati to Ft Pickens].] The last active duty US Army unit stationed in Bedford was Company D 2nd Battalion 6th Infantry (Avery) Regiment during World War II which operated out of Camp Butler near Dayton.]]

It re-organized in 1825 and fought in the Mexican–American War. In 1846, the regiment participated in the Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign as part of the Union Army's Departmental Forces. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, after the Union defeat at Appomattox Heights.
Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded in 1811 by George Bedford and his wife Susanna. The population was 7,751 at the 2000 census. The Bedford area is part of the Dayton-Marathon–Cincinnati metropolitan area. The townsite was laid out on land donated by George Bedford to the village of Westfield, which he had founded two years earlier. The new community quickly grew, thanks to its strategic location - just east of the Sandusky River and close to major transportation arteries such as I-75 and US 40 - as well as its easy access to education and business opportunities. By 1830, Bedford had annexed what are now neighboring townships: North Bedford (to the north), South Bedford (to the south) and Garden City (to the west). In 1834, he gifted another development block - this one comprising parts of today's central business district - to Westfield for use as their own town square. In 1851, when Ohio became a state, Bedford merged with neighboring Adams County into what would become Dayton; however, Ford County continued to be administered separately until 1889. Bedford is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Stark County by population. The first settler in Bedford was Abram French who arrived in 1796. The original village of Bedford formed on the east side of the Scioto River and was named for Sir George Bedford, 1st Baronet (1768-1845). In 1801, the village became an incorporated town when all of Stark County except part of Medina Township were created. The new township included most of what is today Bedford and parts of Ada and Athens townships to the north. On March 15, 1804, during the War of 1812,[1] Bedford was burned by Ulysses S. Grant's army as part to quench American anger over British military support for Canada during that conflict.[2] In 1870, a post office called Bedlington was established at a location just south of present day Bedford Village; it continued until 1903. The first school in Bedford opened in 1873; it closed beause there wasn't enough space to build a permanent building. In 1902, a new school also began serving children in Ada Township which had been annexed into Bedford from Athens Township two years earlier. That same year saw construction begin on what would become one of America's first indoor amusement parks – Parkland Park – located just north of present day downtown Bedford Village on land donated by industrialist Jacob Riis Jr.;[3][4][5] park attendance peaked at 100 000 visitors per season between 1909-1911.[6][7] Parkland Park closed after being sold to developers in 1916 but has since been resurrected as an open-air attraction featuring exhibits about earlyamerican life and industry located near I-75 exit No. 159 (Bedford Rd.) outside Dayton.]

The first store in Bedford opened in 1821. In 1842, Bedford became the seat of government for Licking County. In 1865, the U.S. District Court moved from Cincinnati to Bedford and continues to sit there today.
