The community grew rapidly after it was annexed by the larger town of Bedford in 1868. In 1916, the Post Office moved from its original location to a new building designed by architect James Wickersham that still stands today. Bedford Heights, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern portion of the United States. The population was 5,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York metropolitan area. The town began as a small farming community and was named for General George Washington's General Assembly from Bedford County in 1788. The first post office was established in 1801, and later renamed to Bedford Heights after the village in England where it was located. The first store was built on Main Street in 1809 and operated until 1828. In 1839, a group of settlers led by Elijah Woodruff founded what would become known as the Cincinnati Mechanics School which became one of America's leading educational institutions. In 1865, when Ohio became a state, Bedford Heights incorporated as a village. its first mayor was James Whitehead and its first Treasurer Jens Christensen (1850-1912). Today much of Bedford Heights' history can be found at the Cincinnati History Museum & Botanical Gardens which opened in 1951 and contains many pieces from early America including pioneer tools and implements from Pennsylvania Dutch farmers such as Eli Whitney who invented cotton ginning; cannons from Fort Knox; Revolutionary War memorabilia including uniforms worn by some of America's most famous patriots including George Washington himself; examples of High Victorian architecture; slaves brought over along with their owners during the American Revolution; more than 300 Highland Park horses used for agricultural work on nearby farms before being auctioned off to support local schools; among other items.
Bedford Heights was once a vibrant community that spanned 6 square miles. The area now occupies just over one square mile, but the history of Bedford Heights is still greatly affected by its residents and businesses. The first settlers to the area were farmers who arrived in the early 1800s. By 1825, most of what is now Bedford Heights had been created when the Hopewell Assessment District was established. The district included land around Akron and starred such pioneers as John Cranch and James McNealy. Much of what is now Bedford Heights was purchased from Native Americans in 1827-28 through a treaty process called the Treaty of Fort Meigs. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1830s as new roads were built and families moved into the area. In 1835, two schools were founded in Bedford Heights: one for white children and one for Native American children. By 1840, there were also several churches in Bedford Heights, including an Episcopal church and a Methodist church. During this time, many jobs opened up in downtown Akron thanks to increased trade with Mexico City and Cincinnati due to Stephenson’s canal project. This growth led to some tension between local businessmen and city officials; however, it would be years later before any real conflict erupted between these groups. 2nd ward Alderman Isaac Prentice (D) died on January 3rd 1915 after a long illness at age 87 years old following service as 2nd Ward Alderman for 36 years
