It is known for its history as a military town and for its National Guard unit, the Bedford Heights Armory Regiment. The first national guard unit in Bedford Heights was established on November 8, 1903. The regiment served until 1946. During that time, it participated in numerous wars including World War I and World War II. In 1946, it disbanded and its members were transferred to other units within the National Guard Bureau. Bedford Heights is a neighborhood in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. It was named for Samuel Bedford, an early settler who donated land for the community. The area now includes many single-family homes and two schools, Bedford Heights Elementary School and Bedford Heights High School. The first settlers to the area were farmers who moved from Connecticut in the mid 1800s. They brought their crops and livestock to what is now Bedford Heights, and began planting trees and growing flowers. In 1876, they organized a society to improve agricultural methods and bought a farm on Winton Road which became known as Bedford Park. In 1907, the community had five churches with 300 residents: First Baptist Church (founded in 1876), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1912), Presbyterian Church (founded in 1892), Congregationalist Church (founded in 1853) and African American church Ebenezer Baptist Zion (organized 1897). After World War I, most of these churches closed down or merged into other congregations. However, First Baptist reopened in 1920 after being approved by Cleveland's zoning board; it remains one of the neighborhood's primary religious organizations today. A new school was built at Dexter Avenue and Clairmont Drive in 1927; it served as both Bedford Hills Elementary School and Bedford Heights High School until 1999 when they were amalgamated into Cleveland State University's Valley Campus elementary school district. The population of Bedford Heights has grown since then with annexation of neighboring communities such as Strongsville Township through process called " compacting ". At present there are over 1,500 people living within walking distance of each other within the boundaries of this census-designated place
Bedford Heights was founded in 1825 by the Bedford family. The first settler, John Bedford, arrived in 1797 and built a home on the current site of the community. The community grew rapidly because of its location near the then-new town of Dayton. By 1800, Bedford Heights had a population of around 100 people. In 1825, the Bedford family sold their land to the city of Dayton for $1,500. The city grew quickly and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000 people. The area became known as "The Gilded Age" due to its high wealth and prosperity.
